1080 intermitant squeal

I just came into a 1080 Massey that has an intermittent squeal in the engine. Truth be told, I bought it for the tires, but if it can be repaired cheaply I'd like to save it from the junk man.

When I first bought it and was loading it the noise sounded like it was coming from the alternator. Kinda a higher pitch sound like a dry bearing. When it came home I pulled the fan belt and and the noise was still there. It comes and goes, No rhyme or reason to the noise. I pulled the oil pan to make sure the pick up wasn't clogged with junk. Some crud, but nothing struck out of place for a 2500 engine.

Tomorrow I'll check the rod bearings and balancer unless someone has a better idea...

check clutch release bearing could be going bad and adjusted to tight causing it to spin ,if i make no mistake that tractor has a shaft driven hyd. pump in front of the engine could possibly be something there.

Sounds like the clutch throw out bearing. Crawl under the tractor and take off the plate covering the clutch hole, it will have a grease zerk on it. Now try greasing it and watch to see if the grease is getting in the bearing as the hose will come off the bearing sometimes. Both hyd pumps are in the rearend on the 1080 and you also might need to add some oil. Also check the power steerting pump to see if it is low. good Luck Merle

Hi RGM,
As has been suggested it might be the clutch release bearing. This noise should stop when the pedal is lifted slightly. Check closely the gear driving arrangement from the crankshaft gear downwards. Look for teeth that are worn to a knife edge not the normal 'chisel' shape.
Check also for wear in the needle bearings. If the problem is in the balancer, removal is straight forward but overhaul is a job for a suitable equipped MF dealer.
