12 g blank?

I recall some aircraft engines plus a few old rare tractors start using 12 Gauge shells..........

Now there is something that brings back memories from my younger years.
About like vacuum wipers.
yep, they were noisy thing. a 2inch pipe running to the starter. on the drilling rigs only the power generator was battery start. then once that was started you had your power for rig up and then air for the compressors to start all the other engines.

Not these days, 1Gbps is getting common, 10Gbps feeders are common. In data centers 100Gbps is becoming common. Times change. Wonder if there will be luddites protesting when cell networks get to 12G like they are with 5G. 12G is also an SDI HD video link spec.
I can tell you why they are protesting. 5g is not an improvement. Range is shorter than 4g and performance took a big hit for going to 5g. THAT is why they don't like 5g. So far, the 4g comes out the clear winner.

If my foggy memory is correct the B-52 at one time had that type of starting system. It used a coffee can sized powder charge, made a LOT of smoke. Also the early model F-4s, A and B models, may have had that option, the F-4Cs did not.

We had an IH semi tractor with an air-start 8V71. You got one, maybe two shots at starting it before the air in the tank was expended. Since we seldom parked the thing close to an air compressor, we mounted a gasoline-powered air compressor behind the cab.

I think would have tried a larger tank…. Or a tune-up

Yep, my signal has been bad since the 5G was turned on. With 4G, I had full bars in the basement. Now I don't even take the phone down. There's been enough people telling me it doesn't go to voicemail when it's down there & texts have come through hours after they were sent.

What gets me is....

the Verizon antenna is only two miles away with no other antenna in between.

I'm getting ready to hand out tin cans & string!

The B-52 still has the cartridge starter, just not used much any more. there is an occasional u-tube video on B-52 cart starts.

Several years ago; A local heavy fabrication shop was converting an old Reo lime spreader , with air start, to be a 6 wheel drive, articulated unit, for use on peat ground. It was nearly done, one of the fabricators was working in the cab, and some how hit the air start. It fired up, and drove right through the wall of the shop. I heard it did far more damage to the wall than to the old Reo.
