1939 9n governor

I decided to look at my governor on my 9n to find that it is unlike anything I've seen. This has two pivoting weights that move collar, rather than the 4 ball bearings and races. So if I decided to install new guts, will they work in the old housing? A local Kiotti dealership that used to specialize in old Fords said it was the first variation used in 1939... and my tractor is a '39. I assume replacement parts for the original are unavailable.

Seen those post before. What is wrong with it? Seems like good design to me. Maybe ball type cheaper to build?

Well right now, it won't rev much above about half of where it should. But I can force it to run faster at the Gov/Carb linkage. This old tractor has lots of issues to sort out.

I don't know anything about the early governors being the "flyweight type", however, there were aftermarket tractor parts and accessories sellers that marketed all sorts of gadgets including replacement governors and changeover kits to "update" the innards in your existing governor.

So those are POSSIBILITIES as well.

As you troubleshoot this thing, remember the governor spring tries to open the throttle butterfly, centrifugal force acting on the governor weights fights against the spring as the engine revs up and tries to close the throttle butterfly.

The speed at which these forces balance is the speed at which the engine will run, for a given throttle setting.

Original '39 gov will have four nubs on casting, later gov will have two nubs on casting. Is your 9n a '39?
