1941 Farmall H rim color

Hello all I have a 1941 H that I want to paint but I'm not sure what color the rims should be. They are currently painted red. When did they switch from red rims to silver? I can get some pictures of it and the serial number too. If that would help. Thanks

They were originally galvanized. Rust oleum aluminum is close. Brush it on and it looks like galvanized when dry. Red rims look terrible 😔

They were never red, and I'm pretty sure there's a former wheel inventory manager from IH that would insist that rims were never galvanized, only painted gray/silver.

IMHO the Rustoleum aluminum paint is watery and inconsistent, difficult to work with. Like Italian salad dressing, all the stuff settles out the moment you stop shaking.

I've begun using Rustoleum "gloss smoke gray" on my rims. Color is consistent. Covers in 1 coat. Much happier.

Some questions about early rims but some were coated. Purchased two tractors from climate that was easy on metal and no fluid ever in tires. Picture of one with wreathed look and part of I brushed. Outside has same look as not brushed inside. Can still see part of IH part number wrote inside. Other rims had part number stenciled in. Seem to remember IH didn't call them galvanized and used a different term. Dad had a 41 H that wheels were painted. Seven years before I was born and later I never thought to ask if it was changed over from steel wheels and rims purchased somewhere. Know a Oliver before it was on steel.

Our H looks like they were galvanized . It was bought new and dad is the second owner since grandpa was the one to buy it new. Rims have never been painted to my knowledge. If they have been dad did it. He would not care about looks nor anybody's opinion on it.

The 1936 Paint Committee Decision was that after 1st November 1936 the tractors were to be painted RED. This covered the tractor including wheels. All early Farmall advertising literature for the Farmalls A, B, H and M showed red wheels. The change came somewhere about 1943 when galvanized rims came into use. My July 1941 W-4 had no traces of galvanizing but only red paint on the rims.

I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion. But I like the look of the red rims.

Here's a picture of one of my rims and I was not able to find a trace of silver paint or galvanize anywhere on any of the rims.

I have never been convinced that the rims were galvanized. I suspect, but can't prove, that they were cad-plated.
