1950 Farmall H Estate Buy

Farm Boys Way

New User
I have been looking for an older tractor, to use for mowing. This H was at an estate just down the road from me. I bought it and now going through it some. I changed out the battery and did get it running the other day. Now searching for a decent used tire or tires for it. I gave 900 for it with the woods belly mower. I want to get it ready for grass cutting next season. I mow a little over 5 acres at a farm I work at.

The tractor came with all the manuals and receipts of thing bought in the past.

Can't go wrong for tractor and mower for $900, that is if you don't have to buy all new tires. From the picture, tires don't look that bad. I'd run it until you know you need tires.

If the opposite side tire is totally ruined, replacing it should be a easy task as the one on this side looks to have good tread. Match the actual outside diameter. The numbers might be easy to match, but manufacturers are not too careful to make the OD standard. Two things use a rain cap on the exhaust and shut off the fuel at the tank every time you walk away from it. Jim

We had an H (1941)from 1948 to 1984 and never knew if it had a fuel shut off And I threw away those rain caps. Store it and you don't need to worry about rain. And what I had did not work.

Beings you got it running without much trouble, I'd say you got it bought right.

An H is a handy tractor 'IF' you have the right kind of jobs for it. I prefer pull type equipment for an H, rather than mounted.

A used 38 inch tire seems to be easier to find than other sizes such as 36. You should be able to find a tire if your patient and do some searching around.

Hello Farm boy welcome to YT! Looks like you got a decent buy. Where are you located, do you get freezing temperatures? One thing to check is for water in the rear gear case. Loosen the plug under the tractor between the rear wheels. Turn it loose enough for it to drip. If there is water in there it will be on the bottom and drip out. Once the lube oil starts dripping retighten the plug.
Second thing is a common trouble with Farmalls is the pipe the muffler sets on threads into the exhaust manifold. Often that pipe may not be tight or even if it is tight the threads may not be sealed water tight. This is just a warning that even though you have a can on the muffler water may migrate into the engine through the path mentioned above. Are the hydraulics used to raise and lower the mower? Last did you replace the battery with a 6 volt?

I bought a 12 volt, since that is what was on it. It has a resistor that feeds the coil down to 6v.

Roger that on the warnings, and will take heed. I will be storing it under a 60' open air machine shed on the farm I work at
