1968 MF 135 Starter Problem that wife is trying to help with

Okay, so my HUSBAND has a 1968 MF 135 gas engine and the starter is stuck and it's driving him crazy but he is too stubborn to ask for help. First, it wouldn't start, then he got a starter from another MF and now it starts but won't cut off. I'm not sure if I'm describing it correctly. He said he has it wired correctly. Any thoughts? Anyone?

Thank you for replying...you're the only one! Yes, he installed a new ignition switch. Since then, the starter will disengage and it will crank, but dies as soon as he puts it in gear. He is going to change the carburetor next. Thanks again.

If it dies when he puts it in gear, I'd suspect a fuel issue. The carb may just need some adjustment.

Trying to help your husband when he doesn't want help is not likely to ever go well. But that subject is probably beyond this forum.

I had a strange problem once with my MF202. It would start up just fine with the clutch in. As soon as I put it in gear and let up on the clutch the engine would just die. It was like something from the transmission on back was stuck and not letting the engine continue to turn. It left me thinking very bad things for a couple days.

Then finally, after another day, I went out and started it again and it was just fine. No clunks or noises. It was just fine as if it never happened. That was like 2 or 3 years ago and it's been fine ever since.

Now, what the heck am I supposed to make of that? Any ideas what caused it?
