1970 Case 970 Diesel Starter upgrade?

Hello all,

I have a 1970 case 970 non turbo Diesel tractor. tractor runs great, has no motor issues. Doesnt burn oil.
I am trying to find out if there is an upgrade to the starter for this tractor.
It starts fine when it is warm out - 60 and above. As soon as it starts getting colder it dose not start well.

- no glow plugs that I see
- I keep it plugged in - Just installed brand new block heater
- Starter was just rebuilt by electrical shop in town

It seems like it should turn faster to start on the colder days. Is there a gear reduction starter or something out there?

Thanks
Shawn

if it a 1970 model it should have a manifold heater. Above the starter is there a solenoid with a wire going to the intake manifold. Turn the key to the left to activate the heater . You should here the solenoid click. Depending on temp hold for 30 to60 seconds. If heater is working this should help it start better.

Your 970, when everything is right, should start @ 32 degrees in 5 seconds, without any heat. Casecollector is right about the batteries, but what shape are your cables in? They should be at least 2/0 size, and I think the OEM's were 3/0. Obviously the connections must be clean and solid.
