Hello, my Ford 3000 keeps needing more Hyd oil in the Power Steering pump, but I don’t see a leak. Is it possible for it to be leaking on the backside into the Crankcase?
If so, is there a seal back there that can be replaced by an Average Joe?
Thanks, Don

Yes it can leak into the crankcase. It a simple job to remove the pump (2 bolts) and return and pressure line. Do not bend the lines remove retainer brackets so you can move the lines and get them lined up.

I would disassemble the pump to get at the two front seals. The inner seal the spring goes in on the outer the spring goes out.
Get a seal kit if the pumps worn out get a pump. There are probable 3 are 4 versions for that pump it depends on the PSI they put out. That is determined my the pressure regulator valve setting (shims).

The drive gear is a tapper fit it should come off easy with a common 2 jaw puller. On the reservoir use a thin blade screwdriver keep going around it till you can work it off with a larger screwdriver. I don't beat on the reservoir (can) just easily work it off.

This rebuild kit has two front seals where the other kits have one. Some pumps have two seals on the front shaft, one facing forwards and one facing backwards... SO I prefer this kit....also.. getting the round orings to stay in the figure 8 position will you reassemble the pump halves, will drive you to drink... Lots of heavy grease and a few prayers and it will finally work after about the 13 try.
