1974 Ford 5000 - excessive smoke

Hi All

I was told to do a engine rebuild on my 1974 5000 gas engine (sleeves, rings and pistons).

I'm a little confused on the sizing choices, .020, .030, .040 and the different size bores.

Will I not know what I need until I start taking everything a part?

A ford 5000 does not have sleeves. If the cylinder bores are worn or scored, they will have to be bored out to the next size. If you don't have experience in these engines, your best bet is to find a good machine shop and let them do the measuring and order the correct parts for you.

It should not have had sleeves when it was new, but if the cylinder walls ever got too bad, it could have had sleeves added during a previous rebuild. Also, if it has never been sleeved yet, it might need to be sleeved this time, or not. You will not know what is in there until it comes apart, and if you are not familiar with how to tell what you have and what it might need, I recommend taking it to a good machine shop.
