2 Belt lacer questions

I bought a Threshing machine and a couple belts will need replaced so I have two questions.

#1 What are the (wire clips- staples) officially called that I put in the lacer to splice the two ends of the belt together called as I will need to buy some. And I want to know what to look for but don't know there official name.

#2 I've seen different sizes of these (wire clips - staples). Is there a guide or gauge to tell me to use such and such (# wire clip - staple) on such and such thickness belt.

Thanks Gerald

There used to be 2 types of lacing years ago. One type was the more heavy type and it was called alligator lacing. The more common type I have never heard of a name for it. Was always called belt lacing. I have that tool used for it. The alligator type was more heavy duty and didn’t need the tool as it was a one piece deal. Pretty sure it’s obsolete .

Alligator lacing is what it's called down here as well , still available from vintage suppliers .

A LOT of conveyor belts still use lacing like PTO belts. Any decent industrial supplier worth their salt should be able to set you up with the supplies AND tools. Although. back in the day, the "tools" for re-lacing a belt conveyor were a square, a sharp utility knife, a ball pein hammer to set the lacing, and pliers for the spline.

And NO - I don't care if the auto-corrupt speel-chiggers from MicroShaft and Goggles think that it should be spelled "peen" since they are both as wrong as the communist social system.

Watthour is correct: Clipper, Alligator hammer-in lacing, Alligator rivet/bolt lacing, and many other types of lacings are still in regular use and available at many places. One thing to keep in mind: Alligator lacing (and many other kinds) are often rated stronger and more capable than Clipper, but are often not nearly as good in back-bending applications or on smaller diameter pulleys. If you want to go with a different style of lacing than clipper, be sure to check the diameter and back-bending ratings for your lacing of choice. For a threshing machine, I'd just stick with clipper myself. Any belt supplier will be able to lace them for you for minimal charge.

Different lacing types still in-use: https://www.flexco.com/NA/EN/Flexco/Products/Mechanical-Belt-Fastening-Systems.htm

I use the clipper lacing with my South Bend lathe belt. Had to buy the tools, belting and lacing, though. No one near me that does this! Practice on an old belt first, though. zuhnc
