265 Massey Ferguson steering

I've got a 265 Massey Ferguson that I'm having trouble with wandering steering. But the biggest problem is it takes a half a turn on the steering wheel to correct the steering. So it makes running down the road in high gear very interesting. I recently put a power steering pump on and new steering lines to the cylinder. Was told the steering valve connected to the steering wheel was probably the problem. Does anyone know how to test the steering valve? Are these steering valves rebuildable? Because $1700 seems like a lot of money to just try and see.

Your orbital valve in the steering column is undoubtedly your problem. Pumps regulate fluid pressures, lines move the pressure. This valve opens and closes in relationship to the steering wheel position to provide direction to the steering cylinder. There is a procedure for rebuild and adjustment. Massey calls it a hydro-guide system. There is also a serial number break as it appears there was an update. A good shop manual should have good instructions on both as it appears it's more complicated than just an adjustment in one location.

I replaced the lines because the rubber portion was leaking and the pump because it was hard to turn at idle. But since replacing the pump I have noticed the play in the steering a lot more. Do you know if they still make a rebuild kit for the orbital valve? I was told that you can no longer get parts.

Those are fairly common, maybe made by Cessna? I know when I replaced the upper seal on a 245, which is similar to yours, the kit would fit Massey and Ford and some others. I would suggest that you go to the AGCO Parts website and get the part number and google it, you should get something for less than $1700. This for the steering motor beneath the steering wheel NOT the cylinder in front of the radiator. After replacing the pump and lines how did you bleed the system? The Operators Manual has the procedure and it will be wonky until it's bled correctly.

The steering valve is NOT "undoubtedly your problem". It MAY be, yes, but I would lay my money on a failed steering cylinder piston seal long before condemning (and attempting to "rebuild") the steering valve. Those valves can fail, yes, but they don't usually do it in that way. Pay more attention to the cylinders.

You was 100% right I took the cylinder apart. There was bad seals and scoring inside the tube. Just replaced the whole thing and it drives better than it ever has. Thanks for the help
