3 16s Plow

Thought about adding on to the plow thread already active, but not sure where the gray area is regarding adding vs. hijacking a thread with the MM folk.

Was going to replace the tires, but one of the rims was bad, so switched it to steel - not sure it wasn't in the first place, and I was switching it back - from a 2 bottom parts plow I had with it.

Greased all the zeks and moving parts, hooked it up and turned a couple hundred feet, just to make sure the trip was working; not enough to even touch the surface rust, that and the wheel sizes dictating some depth adjustment, it did plug up once, but else seemed to turn the soil pretty well.

I know, every color is biased, but how did the MM plows perform? The trip drive wheel is quite a bit bigger than the other side - even with that side wearing a cuttoff tire; I presume that is normal, but the rubber was the same size on both sides.

Perhaps more tractor than plow related, but I presume it prefers a few inches of swing each way on the drawbar for easy turning?

Any quirks I should know about?

It may get a slight complex though, as I don't think the Z would like 3 16s too well, so it has to settle for McCormick Deerings pulling it.

Dont know about 3 16's. Neighbor pulled 3 14's with Z. Seemed to go right along with it.

8) That would be a neat sight and sound - they just seem to have a sweet sound to me under load.

Must be a little tougher soil here then; I can't imagine the 6 inches making that much difference.

Actually, with the plow scoured up, and the soil not too compacted I bet this plow doesn't pull too bad (when it loaded up though, that 460 diesel sure snorted before I got the clutch in :shock: it may have a date with a 22-36 but I wanted to make sure the plow was working right first); however for some reason my grandpa always insisted on using his HartParr Oliver 18-27 on 3 16s despite having much better relations with his Z. Even beyond that, I always thought of a Z in the class of a IH H as a 2plow tractor, but may be underestimating it too! :lol:

I know a Z wont handle 3-16s around here have seen a U struggle with 3-16 in the wrong place course we got some fields that get into a good hard clay about 6 inches down too or less

I've got a JTU with a 220, 206 bored to 3 3/4", with enough weight it'll pull 3x14", makes plow days fun.

Except yours being bored and weighted, sounds about like my J! I still have the hood for the original [Wakeshau if my MM history is right] engine, but - if I am repeating the story right: my great-uncle got tired of my grandpa always creaping ahead of him with the Z while cultivating so the J got a "Z ugrade kit" and rubber tires.
