As you may recall from previous posts I once again rebuilt the steering assembly which included installing a replacement gear shaft I licated on Facebook. Once again I couldn't get the tractor to turn. Tried multiple adjustments to make sure hydraulic fluid was circulating. (I'll spare the details unless requested)
Along with one way steering I had again developed leaking from the pipe plug on the steering column. I figured I'd go ahead and replace the o rings contained on the piston in the steering cylinder. (Part number 60 and 62 in the steering assembly diagram). I was told once before that hydraulic fluid traveling to that point may be coming from failed seals in the piston area.
I reassembled, started the tractor with the front end raised, turned the wheel back and forth several time and lowered the front to the ground. Steering was very difficult but it seemed to want to center on it's ownl. I decided to at least drive it a bit and see how bad it was to steer without fully functioning power steering. As you can see from the video it's steering pretty well.
Unfortunately I still need to split again to fix the seals in the transmission. This was supposed to get fixed the last time it was split.
Bottom line is that I've made a few repairs to this steering box, involving buying parts. Granted it's a weak point for the tractor but I've been able to get parts reasonably priced with a bit of patience. Power steering failure in these 300, 350 etc utilities etc does not make them a hopeless case or a very expensive fix as I read in many forums. ... At least that's w what I keep telling myself!
Thanks for the help as always and happy to try and answer any questions
