444 Massey

I took this photo back in 1986. My dad and brother on his 444 Massey Harris pulling a single furrow Cockshutt breaking plow. Reclaiming some farm land that had been flooded in the wet years and gone back to grass. A 13:18 jigsaw of 108 pieces.

My dad's main tractor was a 444 Massey Diesel. It was a row-crop wide-front. It chopped many acres of sileage, pulled Super 77 baler and hay wagon, a small Massey combine, and did a lot of heavy plowing. I left home in 1964. He kept it for a few more years, even after he had switched to new 4020s. Mowing, raking, and cultivating were done with a 340 Farmall. Before that we had an H. He traded in the 340 on the new John Deere, and replaced it with an older M with a manure loader.

The 444 was a tough old tractor. The farmer I worked for in 1971 had me pulling a 12 foot Massey 36 disker to seed the crop that spring. Later the 444 pulled the ten foot deep tillage to work the summerfallow. My brother still has his. The one in the photo.
