5000 Transmission fluid level

Earlier 5000 diesel with the 8/2 transmission. Changing the fluid.

My later year 5000 has a dipstick on the fill plug. This one does not. Only thing the owners manual says is to use the dipstick to check the fluid level.

Is the lower square head pipe plug in the pic a level plug?

And.. dont forget the check plug for the rearend also...
Pulled the drain plugs on both the trans and diff yesterday, letting it drip. Gobs of moisture, couldn't get it out of gear to start it during the hard freeze a couple weeks ago. This tractor never gets worked hard enough to get rid of any water. Undecided about running some diesel in it to flush it out better.

I wouldn't 'run it' with diesel in the trans/diff. If you want to flush, put 5 gallon of diesel in each compartment and roll it back and forth a bit before dumping again. Once probably won't get the job done.
Here's what I do: drain and let as much drip out as possible. Refill with the cheapest alternative fluid that meets minimum specs. Run the machine under light/no load for a short time (a few minutes to an hour at most), then drain immediately. This will get the majority of gunk out. If the drained oil looks terrible, you may want to do this again with a bit more 'stirring/run time' and drain immediately a second time.
Maybe this seems excessive but internal parts and the labor to replace them can be expensive. Oil is expensive but the labor to change oil isn't.

I would have no problem with spinning the transmission only with the engine running for 10-15 seconds with diesel. A lot cheaper than hydraulic fluid.

I agree with Bern, running the trans. for a short period, with diesel, won't hurt it. Did it with the Fordson Majors, and the 5000s in our fleet that sat outside all winter, and collected water, several times.
