801 water pump seal replacement

Trying to replace the water pump seal on my 1959 871. The Ford manual shows a bearing retainer that must be removed before pressing the shaft out of the housing. Step 3 says remove the bearing retainer. Step 4 says press the shaft and bearing assembly out ... I have the pressed-on pulley off, but I cannot find a bearing retainer to remove so I can press the shaft out.

Does the bearing retainer just hold the bearing to the shaft, and is only accessible after the bearing is removed from the housing? Or am I missing something?

Is there a slot in the ''nose'' of the waterpump casting at the midpoint of the bearing outer race?

IF there's a slot with no clip installed, likely it's a rebuilt pump.

If NO slot with the top loop of a sort of spring ''hairpin'' sticking out your waterpump is either a replacement part or from a tractor with a serial number new enough that the part in question was discontinued.

The clip, (if preset) was inserted into the slot in the casting and engaged with a groove in the unit bearing to eliminate any chance of the bearing outer race from ''walking'' forward from the suction of the fan.

To sum up, later or replacement castings didn't have the slot and (likely) a new bearing you may be installing won't have a groove for the spring clip, either.

Worst case scenario would be that a clip in installed and the visible part is rusted away, leaving the end in the slot, making it impossible to press the bearing out. PRETTY unlikely, though!

When I rebuild waterpumps I usually put a smear of Loctite in the cast housing before pressing the unitized bearing in to eliminate any possibility of it moving in the casting bore when placed back in service.
