8340 Ford 4WD transfer case seal leak

I have a 8340 I'm working on. It has a leak from the bottom shaft where the driveshaft connects to run up to the front axle. The manual does not mention servicing this at all. I see there is an o-ring behind the big snap ring. Am I able to just remove the big snap ring and pull this lower shaft out? I haven't tried yet, I'm worried about what is behind this shaft internally.

I think I would try and pry the seal out right where it sits with a large hook tool or even maybe a big flat screwdriver, and drive a new one in with a suitable piece of pipe.

If you wish to stick with plan A, I certainly wouldn't pull the shaft out. It appears that the retainer comes out, but by all means possible, don't let the shaft come with.

Bern, does this apply to the drop box on a TW35 as well? Mine is leaking at the same spot.

Going off memory, I'm pretty sure you will need to remove the front cover on yours to get the seal out, because it's pressed in from the rear. To add insult to injury, I'm reasonably certain that the entire transfer case will need to be dropped before you can remove the cover. That said, it's really not that difficult of a job.

I'll verify tomorrow when I get back to my shop, as I have the same tractor there.

Fordfarmer, I confirmed my earlier suspicions, and that is, the transfer case will need to come off, and you will have to remove the front cover to access the seal.

I was throw off by there being o-rings shown behind this and the fact that there is 2 seals shown in the parts book. I guess that outside "seal" is more just like a fancy dust seal. Either way I got them both off and replaced without touching the big snap ring.

Awesome, thanks for the update.
