880 Oliver PTO Pump

I have a 1959 Oliver 880 which has a Farmhand Loader which runs off an auxiliary PTO pump. Suddenly the PTO shaft from the tractor has no torque and turns very slow, you can actually stop it by grabbing it. I have checked the PTO clutch and it is engaged, and the PTO shaft from the transmission is turning. I suspect the PTO pump has wear, can this be rebuilt and how? I do not have any diagrams of what is in the pump housing.

Are you asking about the PTO pump that runs the loader? That has nothing to do with the PTO shaft slipping on your Oliver 880.

Just because the lever is "engaged" doesn't mean the clutch is good. I don't know how the PTO unit on an Oliver 880 is designed, but I imagine it has some sort of clutch in that housing on the rear of the tractor.

The pto on an 880 is driven by a long shaft with drive splines inside the engine flywheel and the pto clutch. The clutch plates drive a reduction gear that meshes with the larger gear on the pto shaft.

I'm trying to follow along here. You say you can stop the pto shaft by hand? Then you say the pto shaft from the transmission is turning. The pto is driven from the flywheel, the shaft goes thru the transmission but is not connected to the transmission. Either the splines in the flywheel are stripped or the pto clutch needs adjusted or new clutch plates.

Alvin 41--This makes more sense to me, it is not the PTO clutch assembly as I have inspected it and to be honest as I NEVER disengage it as it runs the aux. pump for the Farmhand loader, the pto plates are actually stuck together! I need to pull that shaft out and see what the heck is going on with these gears, might be a couple weeks before I can get to this--right in the midst of corn harvest.
Will post reply once I can have a look. Someone would not have a good exploded view of this, or link to it, I could use it!

Just wanted to post what was actually found once I got some time to look at this. The Clutch splines had simply worn out on the PTO shaft and would not turn. I guess 65 years finally took its toll! Anyway, new clutch plates and shaft installed--back in operation.
Thanks for all the replies!

Yep, that happens. I've had to replace a couple of long shafts over the years. Good to hear you got it going again. Chris
