930 Case Fuel Filter question

I have always used the A21141 and A7627 String filters for the Fuel in my 930 diesel, but i can buy a WIX 33513 and a 33511 filter locally that is a steel canister style.

I am getting a fine rust powder past the first 2 filters and its plugging up my final filter. The WIX filters are supposed to do a better job filtering than a String type filter.

Do any of you have experience with the WIX filters? Any Pros or Cons; rights or wrongs

I have used the wix filters no problems.IF you are getting anything past the first two filters then you need to clean your tank out before putting new filters in.

The filter canisters have a rounded bottom and the string element conforms to the shape and seals. The metal canister is not designed that way, and is simply metal to metal at the bottom of the canister so how can it seal? It can't.

John, It's been a while since I changed mine. The 2 metal filters were rounded on the bottom and had a thick gasket to seal. Did wix change the size and shape?? All my other comfort kings have the spin on filters for the fuel. Thanks for pointing it out

I don't know about the rounded bottom. The ones I have looked at have a gasket, but it is in the center and doesn't touch the canister bottom. If the bottom of the elemment was closed off, forcing everything through the filter body, they'd be fine, but I still don't see how you get a perfect seal, metal to metal.

I remember on the last time I change mine It sealed well on bottom. I just called our local napa and now show the filter as being flat on top and bottom and that is for sure not good. I am happy I still have a set of oem filters on the shelf for next time but the numbers are worn off the 2 boxes.

I noticed my 830 uses the same filters. There is a wide cork band top and bottom on these filter. Is this where they are supposed to deal as opposed to the wound rope compressing on the old filters? I would like to find the rope style, have not seen any. Anybody's thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Nick

Nick, After calling the local napa dealer and finding out the fuel filter shape. I believe they will not seal well on bottom. I would advice buying oem filter from dealers such as John S. That comments on this board. John maybe able to know if any other filter company makes the oem style filter.

I went ahead and bought the 2 WIX filters for the 930 Diesel.

This is what I determined. I took a caliper and measured the filters both new and old. The inside diameter (ID) for both was around 1.100 inches the OD was very similar on both sets of filters both string and canister type.

There is a slight difference in Height, but PLEASE remember the string filter is designed to be crush to fit, where as the WIX canister type is a compression fit.

The WIX canister filter seals against the cork gasket on both top and bottom.

Now; I examined the the canister that holds the filters.

The bolt at the bottom of the filter canisters has an inverted or rolled washers that allows the filter to set in and to seat . There is a taper cone shape just above the top of that tapered cone that helps with alignment of the filter.

This slight cone shape is needed whether your filter is string or canister type to achieve proper alignment for filter placement.

Since both the string filter and the Canister type have very similar Inside diameters both will be guided into place by this taper.

Both the 1st and 2nd stage filters seat on the washer at the bottom and are also aligned for fit at the top by the protrusions toward the top of the bolt.

As long as your Filter Canisters for the filters are in good shape the WIX or similar made filters should work. If your filter housing canisters are damaged or rusted away beyond the ability to seal then you should try and find the string filters.

When I installed the WIX filters ; I noticed they made contact with the SEATING area at the top where they are held in place by the blind hole nut. I am guessing here because I didnt measure it, but I am going to say the WIX filters had probably an 1/8th inch or slightly more compression fit for the Cork Gaskets on the ends of the filters.
