960 D rattle

I swapped a 5 speed onto my 901 Diesel. Now I have a bad rattle at idle from the transmission. I can feel a corresponding vibration from the reverse idler cover, which goes away at higher RPMs. The sound and vibrating feeling go away as soon as I depress the clutch. It engages drives shifts and disengages normally. I have had this 5 speed for twenty years in another tractor. The reverse idler feels smooth and tight on its shaft. It is installed in the correct direction. Ideas?

If your engine idles at or near the 450 specified RPM, delta velocity of the input shaft will cause the internal parts, especially the cluster gear, to rattle back and forth on the shafts creating rattling noises. Such noises are much more noticeable in worn transmissions with excessive fore/aft clearances of the gears, etc.

Such noises were quite noticeable in my 64 Impala with M20 Muncie 4 speed and VERY big camshaft. Later, GM solved such problems in the M21 by use of a split/spring-loaded gear on the input shaft to control the fore and aft movement of the cluster gear caused by delta velocity and helical gears.
