A oil smoke

What is the main purpose of the long narrow tube going from the air intake to the crank case? On my A it was bellowing thick oil smoke out the exhaust on and off. If I left it shut off for awhile and try it it would be good for awhile and then do it again. I thought I had it figured out taking the oil bath air cleaner cup off since it was so cold out, it was good for 20 min but then still started doing it again. Then I disconnected the tube going from intake to crank case. It didn't do it but I only ran it for 10 min since. Also looks like it's leaking oil out before the fan.

What is the serial number of your "A", sounds to me like there's a problem with your crankcase ventilation pump at the back of the fan shaft.

What about the L-shaped tube between the air intake and the valve cover. That's part of the ventilation system, too. The air pump on the fanshaft at the governor pulls air from the intake, forces it into the crankcase and pushes vapors back to the intake. But I think you may have a piston ring problem.

I've determined oil is going from the crankcase to the intake through the long narrow tube. It must take awhile after it's running to start doing that. I disconnected it by the crankcase and it runs fine but oil is coming out of the open hole
