Allis 200 power director

I’m getting ready to strip the case to replace 3rd gear. Just doing a preliminary walk-around, I noticed this substantial gap in the rear clutch of the power director; looks like there is room for 1 more plate and friction, while the forward clutch is stacked up solid. Is it supposed to be like this? There was no complaint of power director operation, only the dropping out of 3rd gear. Thanks, Fritz

I believe if you look in the parts book, you'll see that the high side has one less set of plates than the low side by design. I think the engineers calculated the faster speed of the high side could transmit the same power with fewer plates. Same kind of theory that a 1000 PTO can withstand more power using a faster speed vs 540 pto even if the PTO shaft size is the same. Hopefully Dr. Allis will drop in and explain it a little better.

Something doesn't look correct. 4 discs in the rear section and five discs in the front section is correct. If everything is right, both sides should be loose and flop around back and forth when in neutral. The centering springs are different lengths and the clutch housings themselves are different from a 180/185 to a 190/200 as the 180/185 are 3 and 4 discs instead of 4 and 5 discs.
