Allis Chalmers B, Gemmer steering box

I have some questions about my Gemmer steering box for my Allis Chalmers model B. I am attaching all of the pictures I have taken of it. I have taken it apart, but put together for the pictures.

1. Is it worth trying to weld it? The two mounting tabs are broken off, one is cleanly broken it fits perfectly back into place, the other one someone had already attempted to braze back on. I have already cleaned up the tab some. I do have a MIG welder. I don't really want to spend $400 on a different steering box.

2. Is this a Welch plug? I need to pull the worm gear out to clean the old lube out, it is just goo at this point, I think water got in somehow.

3. Does anyone know where I can find a manual for this steering box? I need to know how to make the adjustments on it.

4. I am guessing that some type of cone shaped part goes into here. Does anyone know where I can find a replacement or do I need to fabricate one?

Any other information or suggestions will be appreciated. I am not trying to make a show piece out of this tractor, just a good working one. I am trying to put it to work on my small farm.
Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

Hello DS welcome to YT! You should have posted this on the Allis Chalmers forum in the manufacturer’s section. I will place a link there to your post here. I am an IH guy so I can’t help you with your questions.

His “Avatar” is a fancy term for the “Username bar” that appears over everyone’s post. I have some information I will send him. It does not provide the type of detail he is requesting about his steering box. Perhaps he should obtain an actual Allis Service manual for his tractor. Here is a link to the options available from YT!

Thanks for the link. I do have some manuals, I didn’t have that one.

Well I have everything disabled, and started the welding repair to the front cover. Minimal wear on the bearings and gears. I tried using my bench grinder to make the conical lock piece. It turned out somewhat ok but, I think it would be better turned on a lathe. I will drop by our local maker space and see if it can be done there.

Here is a picture of the repair so far.
I cut the conical lock piece without putting matting adjustment piece on it to measure where to cut it, now it may be too short. Opps
