Anybody have a new GM P/U or Surburban?

Don't let the line, "10 speed Allison transmission" fool you. . GM does not use Allison transmissions. They paid Allison for the right to use the name only.

Is the recall on them still on going? They have been known to lock up while driving.
My Duramax has a 6 sp. Allison tranny........'07

My '52 Chevy pickup has a 3 speed on the tree. But it isn't new. I changed to the overdrive in '73 when Mom's '59 Chevy car got T-boned, to get better highway speeds. I put the rear axle and open drive line at the same time, also changed the front hubs to 5 lug for more modern 14" tires all around. No problem with transmission but I did put a floor shift in when the linkage got all wallered out.

I used '35 Chevy 3 speeds in my "hot rods" but only use 2nd and 3rd. 4 cyl engine from a Chevy II. Model T frame, Mustang II front, S-10 rear on coil overs. '28 Ford and '56 Chevy Ute.

My '66 Pontiac GTO had a later 400 with original 2 speed slip-a-matic....James

I recommend you talk to a local transmission shop that has been in business for decades to find out who makes the best PU transmission.
I use a local transmission and have my transmissions oil changed as he recommends.
In the past 20 years I only buy GM cars and truck, No transmission issues.
One time he told me to stay away from VW and Audi because only the dealer can reprogram the transmission.
Find someone who rebuilds transmissions you trust. Ask him.
I have little trust in biased U-tube experts.

According to the video an aftermarket builder has made parts that fix the problem. Some GM dealers will even use them, but most won't. For me it begs the question, since these 10 gear things are so expensive, wouldn't it be cheaper to make trucks like locomotives, with one engine running at constant speed and a big generator and maybe a battery or capacitor for excess. THen only a 1fwd 1 reverse would be needed and it seems it would be way cheaper than these gold plated trannies.

Also I one would assume that the problem is fixed in the new models, but who knows. Ford could have fixed the gas tank problem on the Pinto for less then a buck a car and they never did.

If you're buying new it really doesn't matter until it's out of warranty. At that time you can decide if you want to keep it even without warranty or get something different with a warranty.

Pretty much what Edison Motors is doing.

I have had a bunch of Chevy cars and pickups, new and used. The GTO was the only GM that had a problem. Got at wrecking yard for $35. It was weak when I got it but I ran it for 2 years that way, finally got to where it would not back out of diagonal parking. Slipped enough it got terrible gas mileage....James

Kinda like a Chevy Volt?

Ford did incorporate federally mandated changes to the Pinto in 1977. Only six years after building the first one however.
Plus Ford recalled all Pintos made thru 1976 for modifications.

Not really. A volt is a hybrid that can use battery, ice or a combination of the two. Since the wheels can be driven by the gasoline engine it still needs a multispeed transmission with reverse or cvt with reverse because of the piston engine's limited rpm range and inability to run backwards. If it were driven only by the electric motor, and used the ice only for charging, a single speed gearbox without a reverse could be used beause the electric motor has a large rpm range and rotation can be reversed.

Oh, like a hydrid ?

The savings would be in the transmission, and gas or diesel engines can be made to run cleaner if run at a constant speed.

Interestingly, based on our experience with a 1st gen Volt, it has never acted as you state (though I know the book says it can). It always seems to run electrically, even when the engine is on. I have never seen it mechanically connect the engine crank to the tires. Unless the status screen is not accurate. If it is, when the engine is on, it is solely producing electricity, and that power is either going to the electric motor, or to the battery. Further, when the engine is on, the rpm of the engine is not directly correlated to road speed or throttle position.

2018 Ford f150 with a 10 speed. Timely question. Mines giving trouble with 76k on it. Just got the repair quote today from Ford. $6500. Have had Ford trucks for more than 50 years. Never a trans problem. After reading appears plenty of issues. Ford and G M are both using the same trans. I will have mine fixed I guess. Really has been a great truck and have liked the trans up til now.
Interesting how total opponents for decades have gotten in the bath tub together.....totally amazing.

Well I agree with the larger trucks getting the real McCoy since they were designed for the 10 wheel sized trucks anyway as I saw the projected consumer when they came out decades ago.

Power Glides were pretty good for a sensible driver As I remembered them.
They are hot numbers at drag strips too.....actually preferred due to only one shift. But I'm gonna "betcha" what's inside the cowling wasn't in the 1964 Chevy sedan when the Power Glide first came out.....that '64 Chevy 4 door top of the line....forget the acronym, was a beautiful car as was the '55, and '56, and '57....I 'lusted in my heart' (Jimmy carter) for one of those suckers when I was a teen trying to snag me a girl friend. I got the girl friend, that I spent 49 years of marriage with before she expired , in mother's '51 Ford Custom 2 door sedan.
