B,C,CA mower

I have a B with a C rear end, use it for snow plowing. This weekend I had a chance to pick up a center mount mower for reasonable. I don't need it, don't hay and live in woods, but it was reasonable and orange so it is in the yard now. It has front mounting brackets that look like they can bolt on to the mower frame in two positions to mount on B, C, or the longer wheelbase CA. Anyway it came with both rear drive pulleys however the spline on the upper one is 1 3/8, and doesn't fit the one on my C rear end which is (I think), 1 1/8. The mower was supposed to have been used on the B the guy I bought it from had. Possibly the CA had a larger PTO shaft then the B, Cs. Also the pulleys are double sheave and B,C mowers I have seen are single. The double sheaves are smaller dia. than I remember too. Can anyone shed some light on what I ended up with. Does anyone have a pulley to fit the smaller PTO shaft? As I said, not desperate, but maybe someday it might be fun to mount it up especially if some use came along for it. It seems to be in pretty good shape with the exception of the inside pitman rod end which has been run loose on the bearing but I think my brother has on on a parts mower he has but I don't think he has a PTO pulley. Thanks, Tom

There used to be a sleeve available which fit over the 1 1/8 shaft which had an OD of 1 1/4. That was back in the 40s/50s. I believe you can get weld-a-sprocket hubs that are 1 1/8. Shaft bearings for that mower are extremely spendy, but I found a similar bearing and turned it down in the lathe...ok for parade use.

Thanks for the fast reply! I know about the sleeves and it might work however the hub on the pulley I have is too long for the clamping end to tighten onto the PTO shaft and I don't know if it can be shortened without the pulleys getting too close to the PTO housing. Need to look into it more and when the weather is nicer maybe I can get out and measure things to see what will fit.

I saw a sleeve that was literally only the splines. Slid right on and would not set the pulley back any. No clue who made it or where you'd find another. The later Cs came with the 1 3/8" shaft and you can swap shafts easily. Or sell the mower to my boy and let it be my problem.

Can you post some pictures? There were differences in the c ca and b far as mounts. The b and c had a single pully the ca had a double. It is quite possible over the years to have some customizing!!

Thanks for the replies. That's what I thought that maybe the CAs had the double pulleys and larger shaft. Interssting thought that later Cs also had the larger shaft. I will probably see if I can find an adapter sleeve and shorten this hub to fit the shaft. If not I may be able to make a hub, I have a shop in the basement that among other machines includes a shaper that can be made to cut internal splines and keyways. It's a lot of setup and work though. But I'm not in a hurry. Probably wait until the weather is nice and take off the snowplow and try the mower for fit and make sure pulley alignment will be good with whatever I do.

The used Woods 59 mower was removed from a CA and has a single groove pully. I never looked over the Woods 306 mower. I didn't see where it was a Woods mower though. I would assume different manufactures would use different mounting and pulleys.

With the double pulley, its probably a #5 mower which was designed for the CA but was built with options to fit the B and C as well.
BTW, I believe the later Bs and Cs had the 1-3/8" PTO. The pulley assembly could be had with the 1-1/8" spline or the 1-3/8" spllne.
Pictures would really be nice if you want a more definitive answer.
