Brush Hog 286 - rusted driveline slip clutch

This is a very old 286 that hasn't been used in a long time. I want to use it again. The drive line was froze up to where it wouldn't extend so I took it off by removing the bolts and springs & nuts of the slip clutch. There was one clutch lining that crumbled up when everything came apart. I went online to find new parts, and I see different makers on the driveline, but they all have 2 linings. This one doesn't have the inner plate that would use a 2nd clutch lining. The thing couldn't come out on it's own. I don't understand why somebody would have removed it, if that's what happened. This slip clutch looks like it was built with one lining. Has anyone else seen this?

If you post up some pictures, I may be able to provide some feedback.

Are you looking for replacement friction disks (if available) or a whole new clutch?

Depending on cost and availability, you may be able to look up the slippage specs and just get a generic slip clutch universal knuckle from a company like Weasler.

I did this at our local NH dealer for a Sitrex Tedder... they had the parts catalog on file, looked up the slip clutch specs... found a generic knuckle with the same slip specifications... sold me the knuckle and a cross to integrate it into my PTO shaft.

It will cost you a knuckle and a cross... but you'll know what you have.

Bush Hog website?
They are pretty good with parts support for their older models. Or your local BH dealer. The John Deere dealer in my home town is a BH dealer and I have bought parts from them.

If it has a Eurpoean "tri-lobe" PTO shaft as the parts books show it's not THAT old. That's what the parts book on Messick's website shows, two options.

You said it's rusty. You sure the second friction disc isn't there, and just buried in rust? I could see where parts 14, 15, 17, and 30 could be fused together with rust and look like one solid piece.

I would like to know how to get the drive live freed up so it telescopes again? Cost to much to replace everything. My plan so far is soak it with penetrating oil and try to pull mower around by drive shaft only???? Not sure if I could get heat on it with a torch with plastic guard on it???

Be careful doing that. (Or avoid it altogether)

You might end up with a drive shaft that still won't telescope; and your PTO guts pulled out of your tractor, especially if you are pulling it with an old Ford, from the N series up to the 600/800 series. The only thing that holds their PTO shafts in the tractor is a big snap ring. They aren't made to pull things.

Setup some tension and some vibration...and penetrating oil doesn't hurt.

As far as cost...

Some eggs must be broken to make an omelette...
