Can a white 5100 or 6100 corn planter with upgrades keep up with modern planters?

I’m considering selling my 4 row John Deere 7000 to upgrade to something 6 row. All the neighbors have 6 row heads and I can’t see maintaining a combine for 50 acres of corn. So I’d need a 6 row to hire out the neighbors, my current 7000 has Martin row cleaners, Martin spiked closing wheels, yetter drag chains, yetter no till liquid fertilizer applicators, John blue squish pump, and twin 70 gal tanks with transfer pump coupler. And also pioneer meters and brand new dicky John 4 row monitor. I’d really like to have hydraulic markers, and the more I look at the 5100’s and 6100’s the more I’m wondering how they could compare to a John Deere 7200 which is pretty versatile.

How are your guess rows? Not the end of the world to combine odd rows if they're close. Even if they're not the head can usually get all the ears. Could also pick 4 rows with the 6 row head and just drive faster.

that is what i would do. pick 4 and go . lots of guys doing that around me with 12 row headers and 8 row planters.

My guess is your 4 row is wide, so you either need to narrow your planter or get a different planter. I narrowed a 8 row wide 7000 years ago and picked with a 6 never really a problem. I now am on my second White planter started with a 5000 6 row with a splitter and now have 6000. six row planters are harder to find than 12s. There are more bells and whistles for JD planters than Whites. You seem to like all the latest attachments. Don't know what the ROI on all of them is on 50 acres. I started no-tilling a few years ago. Just a few more years, then it can be somebody elses problem and I'll watch from the porch.

Id just rent it out, no more worries.

For many years dad planted with a 4 row but combined with a 3 row. As asked above are you going from wide row to narrow row? White is a very good planter but if you need parts around here you have a much better chance of the local dealer having what you need on hand where JD is concerned. White has pretty much fled the area here and the nearest AGCO dealers have a MF ancestry so they are not deep in White parts.

It’s 30 inch rows.

I’m pretty close to maibachs which is a white dealer. My 7000 is narrow row.

If your planter is narrow, I would keep using it on 50 acres. It seems yours is ready to go. You will have very little problems harvesting with a 6 row. Have a great season

If you go from a JD 7000 to a 5100 you will be very disappointed. I started with IH 400 then went to 5100 White I just never was satisfied with seed spacing but it was better than the 400. The when I went to 12 row I got a Kinze. Boy that was a nice accurate planter. I'm retired now but if I was buying a planter today it would be a Kinze.

Kinze 2100 and JD 7000 are same planter-Kinze parts are much less expensive. Kinze planter less expensive also.

Run one more hydraulic line to marker cylinder and you have hydraulic markers.
