Case 870 connecting remotes of a JDeere cx15 rotary mower

Hi, I feel silly, but I'm optimistic that an answer is out there for this. I just bought a used John Deere cx15 rotary mower batwing type to replace an older wing fold mower. Both have 3 remote hoses: 1 for each wing and one for mower height. The old mower, a Bush Hog, seemed to have the same type of remote hydraulic hose operations, and the 870 did great. I just got this cx15, connected up the remotes to the tractor similarly, and I can't get the height to operate. The wings raise and lower fine. But no matter which tractor remote I connect the hose for the cylinder for the height adjustment, it'll move about 1/4", but that's it. Any thoughts or suggestions will be most welcomed! Thank you all. Jon

You have an issue with the remote ends. If one is not opening, because not compatible with the tractor, for instance, the oil can't exhaust from the opposite end of the cylinder, and cause the symptoms you describe.

I recently discovered that Allis-Chalmers made a male remote tip that is not discernable from the ordinary Pioneer tip with the naked eye, yet will plug into but not latch in any remote that is designed for a Pioneer end. The retainer groove is 1/16" further back.

I agree with Fritz one of your make fittings is likely not joining correctly and is blocking the flow. Just incase on a slim chance are you sure there is not a mechanical lock or pin that needs removed to operate it?

Without being there,I can't say why your Batwing doesn't raise, but I will tell you that your 870 must have 2 hoses for that raising cyl.. Here is why. When you pull the lever to raise, the pump flows oil to the cyl, raising whatever. However, when you move the lever the opposite way, gravity causes oil to flow back, lowering whatever, but the pump is deadheading against the relief valve, trying to force oil out the remote that is not hooked up. We have a Bush Hog hooked to our 870, and I ran an extra hose to the raising cyl.. If you look at that cyl, you will have a port not being used.

If you still have the old mower, and it functioned with your 870, swap the tips. You didn't have trouble until you changed implements..... and unless there is some mechanical seizure on the new mower, it should work.
Also is possible to have a weak or broken spring in male remote end. There has to be enough spring pressure to push the poppet open on the tractor.... unless it has lever locks.... and if the opposing spring forces are not equal, the oil velocity can push both valves toward the weaker spring and stop the flow.

Take a punch and push on the tractor poppet with the engine off and make sure there is no pressure against the valve or in the hose before plugging in the hose. Then, try everything at idle speed with the flow control turned all the way down, if so equipped.

Trying taking the vent plug out of the cylinder. We have this happen on mowers that have set awhile.
What do you think this will do? You basically have nearly full hydraulic pressure pushing against the vent. Should push almost anything out of there. If it is holding something back it would have to be full of oil that bypassed the ram piston if there was air in there it would move more than a 1/4” he mentions. It’s easy to do and worth a try I guess but I can’t understand how it will solve his problems.

I run 5 batwings daily. Oil gets to the back side of the seal, being it doesn’t have a hose to return oil it gets trapped. I’d bet a dollar to a donut on this. Happens because that cylinder usually only raises a few inches instead of full stroke or because they are packing the mower.

I guess I missed that. I did not know these are all single acting cylinders , I thought the tractor had 3 double acting remotes.

If that be the case, then plugged vent would certainly would cause this malfunction....especially since the former implement was operating with the same 3 hose/ gravity drop configuration.

Okay, thanks! That helps me understand it a bit more.
Just some FYI, if you want to “quote” or reply/comment on what someone has said you hit “Reply” in the lower right of their reply box, as you did in reply 8. Then type your comment under the quoted wording. If you want to just address a sentence or two of what has been said you select or highlight it. Then the word reply pops up to click on.

When you do that you can type what you want to say under it, like this.
