Cheapest method to get donated hay hauled to N Carolina?

Good luck
I gave away 2 trailer loads for the Texas fires a few years ago.
All the resources that were supposed to be helping move it never showed never called.

What would be the cheapest method to get an 18 wheeler load of free/donated by me 4X5+ rd bales of hay hauled from DFW area to North Carolina flooded area? Thanks, Jim
Googling: hay donations for north carolina

Shows a few links to government and religious websites that might have suggestions to look at.

Years ago during a drought in Texas a friend in MN. a friend hauled loads down there on his tandem dual trailer and P/U truck.

I think it's a great thing to donate hay. So don't get me wrong here. This will probably go over like a lead balloon.

We had some bad fires in Western Oklahoma a few years back. Everyone rushed to donate hay to those folks. MOST OF WHICH were owners of herds in the hundreds of head. Had the same thing when there was a blizzard up there one year.

These are guys that have incredible assets, who might suffer, but will continue in business, if they have to buy hay on the open market.

Same same when there's tornados here. You see an army of volunteers overrunning well-to-do neighborhoods.....................but not a soul working to help those in lousy neighborhoods, or trailer parks.

I'm not saying this is the case in North Carolina, but it surely happens here.

It seems that bucks-up folks are the first to ask for help. Poor folks just get by like they've always gotten by. Nobody goes out of their way to help them. And...........this is just personal experience........those bucks-up folks are always the ones that say people should pull themselves up by their own bootstraps.

IMHO

Try to think of something that goes the other way...

What is being shipped from NC to TX?

(I don't know the answer to this...but it might be a worthwhile exercise)

There used to be a guy that hauled hay to Virginia from dad's farm, back in the 80's... before craigslist and the interwebz

When dad asked him how he got the idea to haul hay from NY to Virginia... he said that he was looking for anything he could backhaul...as he was hauling watermelons from NC to Montreal.

Another thought from the 80's that just occurred to me is rail...

There was a droughth down south in the summer/fall of 1986. Somehow Conrail... CDX... whatever the rail hauler was... donated freight cars. A bunch of local farmers sent hay to the train station in Utica. It was hauled by dump trucks from the local town highway departments... and loaded (small squares) on the rail cars by prisoners on work detail. I can remember loading dump trucks at our place; because mom and dad were in the local group of farmers that donated; as we had a wet summer that year... we were putting hay in every outbuilding we could find that September.

(personal note... I blame any poor performances in my senior year of football on being tired from loading dump trucks on Saturday morning... even though it was only one weekend... I can float that weekend to whatever game is being discussed, or to a Friday... if we're talking night games... lol)

Research the affected counties in the Carolinas, then Google that counties extension service, maybe they will have a network in place, or inquire with Texas ag officials to see if they have a network in place...

You would be surprised of the people that show up when free stuff is being passed out.
There was a storm where the electricity was off for a few days.
Very little damage to houses and or cars just the electricity was off.
The state announced they would be giving out food stamps to everyone in xyz zip code to replace food lost.
Drive up show your drivers license and they give you a food stamp card.
Next day they showed the line of cars waiting to get their card on the local news.
BMW Mercedes Lexus People that clearly could afford to lose a freezer full of food if they by some odd chance never had a generator.

I'm waiting on a reply to their form I filled out.

My mom ran the local Red Cross office for years, while it's noble that you're willing to donate hay it will be simpler for everyone involved to just send cash. Find a charity in the area that you trust or at least that doesn't take 95% off the top like some may in "administration costs".

I'm aware of that fact but I have more rd bales of hay available that I could donate than I have excess $$$$!!!

Where the Turner Turnpike goes into Tulsa, there's an Arby's at the first exit ramp. I always either like to stop there, or at the Carl's Jr. on the other side of the highway.

Anyways....................... A lot of homeless people are around this area. Some will stand at the intersection at the service road with signs asking for money.

I don't give money. I buy a sandwich, and a drink, then take it to them when I leave. I figure a coupla sandwiches every few months won't break the bank...........and I can face myself in the mirror.

It's tough to just hand over a few bucks. You have no idea how it'll be spent. Same with storm donations.

Transportation 1000 miles might cost way more than the hay is worth. Maybe consider a cash donation to buy hay that is closer or to move livestock to where feed is available? Offer to board the livestock?

Thank you for your input BUT as I previously stated due to my retirement & living on social security income I have more hay I could donate than available $$$$$$$$$$! I think transporting livestock from NC to TX then back to NC will cost a lot more than hay transportation from Tx to NC.

I wonder if a railroad would be responsive to a request for a donation? If there were enough hay to fill a car(s) and the request came for a politician it might stir up some interest. Good human interest story for local TV on both ends.
