HELLO all, This winter project consist in rebuilding the engine in my 1946 cockshutt/oliver tractor. I had been collecting parts for the job for the last 4/5 years but still missing the frost plugs . The correct name for those plugs is SAUCER CORE PLUGS. The old gentlemem at the napa store across the border in Newport VT. knew exactly what it was but had no idea where to get them. He is the guy who recognised it and came with the name when I showed him one. So any help will be greatly appreciated. Merci et bonne année `a vous tous. Yvon48

While they MAY save an engine from cracking if the coolant is weak and the temperatures get cold, the original intent was that they allow removal of the sand cores after the engine was cast at the foundry. 🤷‍♂️
I’ve just always called them soft plugs.
I’ve never had any problem finding them from a good aftermarket parts store. How many places have you looked?

I believe the correct name for those saucer shaped core plugs is Welch plug. NAPA online shows Welch plugs and also uses the title "concave steel cup expansion plug" for some. Have you looked up the sizes you need from the parts book? They are available at most parts stores and many other places, including eBay and Amazon.

You may have to measure them and order generic ones. Oliver 60 would be a fun project! You might check with oliver parts or restoration places. I know the 60 engine can be a parts issue. There is also special tool sets for installing removing them. There is a coolant block heater that goes in place of them for winter starting. I too have heard them called many names frost plug is most common in my area. But freeze, casting, welch core, knockouts to name a few

The online Oliver 60 parts book gives sizes, I suggest he confirm the dimensions there match his needs. I saw at least three different sizes used.

Use to find them in the orange Dorman brand parts cabinets behind the counter at the parts stores.

I call them core plugs because my longest career was in the metal casting industry.

And we were told core plugs have a outer perimeter wall like a shallow cap. And if you were really lucky the freezing water might push it out enough that the block water would drain out. But only to the bottom of the plug.

And that the Welch plug design (just a concave metal disc with no rim) would just dig in to hold back pressure when pushed out from the inside.

Thank you for calling them by the correct name. Dorman has a lot of them but you may not find many at parts stores. Try an industrial supply store like McMaster-Carr, Grainger, MSC, etc.
