COOP E3, just my little tale for today.

FIL's '48 has been setting in the garage unused at least 5 or 6 years. I've been meaning to get it running again. last spring I rebuilt the carb and bought a new 6-volt. Finally got to it today. Finished mounting the carb and put the battery on. Hit the starter and it spun nicely. Put some gas in it, a drip or two from the sediment bowl valve. Had 1/4 inch of brown stuff in the bottom but I didn't want to take the glass off so I let that go. I little choke and it started in two seconds and ran smooth, and charged too. Thought I'd at least have to clean the points to get spark and fool with the regulator. This old gal has always been a good starter but this surprised me. Coolant was low, I put a gallon of water in it and let it run some. I saw a few tiny orange sparks out the exhaust but then saw some around the generator in the fan draft so I could not tell where they were coming from. It's a Delco, not the original Autolite, and seemed to be a little hot on the pulley and case after the short run. Need to find where the sparks came from.

Less joy today. I found the source of the sparks and why the generator got so hot. Big crack in the manifold. You can see the flame in the first picture. Looks to have been welded before.

And this is where getting an antique tractor back into shape gets interesting…and expensive. Phil (or his replacement) sells these, but these parts get expensive fast.
I’ll be needing an intake and exhaust manifold for an Oliver 70 soon. Once you figure both of them, plus the elbows and the muffler, that’s about half of what you’d be lucky to get for the whole tractor if you sell it.
It’s not a poor man’s hobby.

Can you clean it up and weld it on the tractor? Weld a little at a time and let it cool good inbetween?
