Are you asking about the whole mower or just the cutter bar. Whole mower I believe would fit just fine.I am looking for a sickle bar for my formal a. I have located one on a Farmal super a will it work on my A ? if so, what will I need to make it work?
Yes I am talking about the whole mower, and I also think it will fit except the hook up that goes onto that super a hydraulic would have to be changed to some type of lever connection for my A ,that is what I am missing or need. This is also a rear mounted mower. I can send picture if need be. Thank you , any help would be appreciated because I never had a sickle bar mower on this tractorAre you asking about the whole mower or just the cutter bar. Whole mower I believe would fit just fine.
Thank you Jim. I am just wondering if the entire mower from a super A will work on my A . since I never had a mower on this tractor, and no nothing about them. The one I am looking at on a super a looks like it will fit, except for the fact of the long arm on the left side that hooks up to the hydraulics on the super A. would I be better off waiting for an entire system to fit my a or is it possible to find that arm to hook it up? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.The Model of tractor you have "A" is not the same as the model of mower. To help us answer as asked, we cannot. To solve the problem this time, laying the two bars next to each other is likely best. Determining the model numbers of both mowers and comparing part numbers would also work. If your sickle bar is broken, it can be welded and made as good as new for modest cost. If it is dull or has missing sections, learn to replace them, There are hundreds of videos on that, and it is part of mower ownership. If the sections are dull, the ledger plates on the guards are also likely to be worn beyond acceptable. They are also a replacement item and available. Jim
The A used what was called the A-16 sickle bar mower and is pretty much all that mower fits. I built a tractor out of parts a few years ago because I had an A-16 so tha tractor is half B and half AYes I am talking about the whole mower, and I also think it will fit except the hook up that goes onto that super a hydraulic would have to be changed to some type of lever connection for my A ,that is what I am missing or need. I thought you were asking about a side mount mower. All bets off.Yes I am talking about the whole mower, and I also think it will fit except the hook up that goes onto that super a hydraulic would have to be changed to some type of lever connection for my A ,that is what I am missing or need. Thank you Jim that was very helpful so it looks like I need the 16 a or the 25V I will be looking for one of those to put on my a. I am very glad I checked into this forum , you are very knowledgeable , Thanks againThe mower you are looking at is probably an A-21, although it could be a heavier A-24. There are 2 problems trying to put it (either one) on an A. The Super A uses the quick-attach drawbar system and the A does not. Most implements that attach to the drawbar position on the final drive do not mix well between the two systems. Maybe the mower would be okay, but I doubt it. The second problem, which you identified, is the lift system which depends on the Touch-Control hydraulic system. The lack of hydraulics on the A means you need to do a lot to provide an alternate way to lift it.
You would be way ahead if you could find a mower intended to fit your tractor. The 16-A, which old mentioned in his post, would be ideal. Outwardly, it looks much like the A-21. It has a similar drawbar except designed for the older attaching system. Rather than the connections for hydraulics, it has a large hand lever on the right side for manual lifting. Another option would be something like the 25-V. It is a semi-mout that bolts to the tractor drawbar and has a tail wheel to hold up the back. It has a hand lift similar to the 16-A.
Hello Harvey, welcome to YT! Glad to have you along!Thank you Jim that was very helpful so it looks like I need the 16 a or the 25V I will be looking for one of those to put on my a. I am very glad I checked into this forum , you are very knowledgeable , Thanks again
Keep in mind that you are dealing with 75 year old equipment here, and it's not like you can just log on to Amazon and order what you're looking for. Sometimes it's a matter of make do with what you can find. You will also likely have to come up with creative solutions for missing parts; the likelihood that anyone will have the part that was lost off yours is slim to none, because it was probably lost off most every example.Thank you Jim that was very helpful so it looks like I need the 16 a or the 25V I will be looking for one of those to put on my a. Yes, if you have any pictures, I would appreciate that, maybe even the model number. ThanksI had an A years ago, the sickle bar mower bolted right under the tractor, 6 bolts I think on the rear. - It had a 6 ft bar & manual lift . Made a man out of you picking that head up & down. Not sure if I have a pic. I'll look.
Very helpful thank you. I will try to look for that rear mounted one. I think it is a model 25 – V.Keep in mind that you are dealing with 75 year old equipment here, and it's not like you can just log on to Amazon and order what you're looking for. It's hard to find complete implements for the A and B. Everything, even the lift mechanisms, are unique to each implement. When you do find one be prepared to identify it yourself, because the seller usually won't know what model it is.
Your best bet to finding a mower in the near term is to look for a mower that bolts to the U-shaped drawbar and has a tailwheel. They're pretty universal and even 7' ones don't take much power to run so the A will operate it just fine.
If you have some creativity and fabrication skill it should not be a huge challenge to get a Super A rear-mounted mower to fit on an A, but you'll need to devise a lift system of your own. There's no ready-made solution for that.
This is what we think is a Farmall model A-24 on a '51 Farmall Super A. It is as you can see it's raised and lowered via the rear hydraulic lift on the tractor. It bolts onto the bull gear housings by 3 bolts under the tractor, on each side. This is the only picture that I have of it mounted onto the tractor. Hope it helps.Yes, if you have any pictures, I would appreciate that, maybe even the model number. Thanks
You beat me to it. I was.gonna post this pic. Although not an A, one might work if a lift mechanism could be added. This is what we think is a Farmall model A-24 on a '51 Farmall Super A. By the way you may find one that fits a B or BN [ had a look at the picture of the A/ SA ] it is the same/ similar to the one I have that fit the rear of our BN except for the extra linkage on ours that goes to the left bull gear housing. It is hand lift by a long leaver.Keep in mind that you are dealing with 75 year old equipment here, and it's not like you can just log on to Amazon and order what you're looking for.
