Farmall Cub Steering Gears

I have a 1955 Farmall Cub, and I am in the process of replacing a damaged bolster and steering gear housing. I have the replacements and have the broken parts off the tractor. Anything I need to know about taking the steering gear out of the old housing and putting it in to the new housing. I have the caster nut off the bottom of the gear housing and the bolts off and have separated the bolster from the steer gear housing, but nothing seems to budge. Am I missing something? I do not want to break something in trying to fix something. Thanks in advance.

Some one on another forum responded, and I got it all apart. Now working on getting the gears into the good steering housing.

What was the solution to getting the gear out? I may be facing that task soon.

Which gear, the worm, or sector. The worm is part of the shaft. the gear is splined to the vertical shaft. See the diagram. The castle nut pulls the steering arm upwards on a keyed taper. that might need heat to get off the taper. Pullers tend to be difficult to get onto the arm. Jim

Really not much of a problem. I do not know if the gear had been out since 1955 so it was in tight. I was concerned there might be something mechanically holding it in that was not evident. There is a caster nut at the bottom with a pin through it so the nut will not unscrew. Once the pin is out and the nut is off, then the steering arm arm needs to come off. That might take some persuasion, and I used a rubber mallet and a brass hammer to tap on it. It is a little tricky to get off in the space available. Once it is off, then the shaft and gears come out on the other side. I did not have to take the gear off the tapered shaft, which also can be a challenge. There are some washer to look out for, including a brass steering worm wheel shaft washer, to make sure they get back on in the right order. There is also a seal there and since everything is apart, it might be a good time replace it if so inclined. Looks like I might have an extra steering Gear Housing base assembly (part 350 889 R11) if someone needs one. The steering gear housing above it (part 350 886 R23) had a broken ear on my tractor, but turns on the base assembly below it was okay. Good luck.

That diagram is helpful. Thanks

Thanks for the response. I hope that I don't need to do it but your description will help if I do. Thanks
