Farmall H Serial Number

I have a Farmall H Serial Number 31834 which would make it a 1949. However, all the castings are a "J" code which would make them from 1940. The serial number on the engine matches the serial plate. I am trying to understand how these are that far off. Is it possible they used castings from 1940 on a 1949? Has anyone seen a discrepancy between castings and serial numbers like this before?

Edit: I incorrectly counted the number of digits. It is in fact a 1940! The castings and serial number check out. I have answered my own question. My apologies for posting.....

Serial 31834 would be a 1940. That said some models can have the casting dates from the previous year. Probably not the one you have though.

I did the same thing on my 450D.Misread the SN,thought it was a november'56 model. So am I. Got it home and realized there was an 'extra' 1 in the SN,makeing it a '57. I was disapointed. It would have been so cool to have a tractor that matched my birthdate. So, it does happen.
