Ferguson TO-35 stuck in 1rst Gear

Yeh happened to me when I was about 13 years old plowing with to-35. I went to shift gears but when I let out on the clutch tractor went backwards. I thought, man I am in trouble now. When my uncle came back he kind of almost chuckled. It does that now and then it’s stuck in two gears. We went to the field where he removed he transmission fill plug and then fiddled with the gears with a long screwdriver. All of the sudden he’s like it’ll be fine now.
It's NOT stuck in two gears. What usually happens is tractor is in first gear, driver shifts FAST to second. The first/reverse rail OVERSHOOTS the center/neutral position and goes into REVERSE, but the shift lever end is in the second/third rail notch, and can't move back to the first/reverse notch. With the oil fill cap off and moving the large first gear FORWARD with a long tool gets those fork grooves aligned again. Shift SLOWLY, and it will never happen again, remember, it ain't a HURST.....

If I put the tractor in a high forward gear and rock tractor backwards would it turn engine backwards?
Thanks
Yes. But. The but is that there is an obstruction causing the lockup. If you ram through that, you may be into far more money. A endoscope from the internet is a device that attached with a USB (C or adapter), to your smart phone allowing you to see directly into the cylinders clearly. if backing up allows better clearance in the cylinders, do that, but don't force anything. a screw, or parts on the cylinder will lock it up. Breaking a piston, or bending a connecting rod are possible results. JimJim

How would a screw or part get into a cylinder?

Hello. I bought a TO-35 and it seems to be stuck in first gear. Tractor has been sitting in a barn for at least 10 or more years. Haven't tried to start it yet. The High-Low range will shift into neutral. The motor does rotate but just won't pop out of gear. Any ideals what to try or do next? Should I try to take the top of the trans. apart?
Thank you
Take a good look at the pictures I posted, and pay attention to Dieseltech post.

IF an ENGINE VALVE is bent, stuck,or broken....and you get rammy....then your are in for spending $$$$$'s
IF the Engine is a gas model, and has lost some of the BALLS in the Governor...they maybe Jamming....???

There are screws holding the choke plate and throttle plate the their respective shafts. These are often found making an impression on piston heads. Chunks of broken valve guide, carbon chunks from the back side of coked up valve stems/cylinder heads, and pieces of hard rubber from deteriorating intake hosing are all suspects. Looking is cheap not looking can be expensive. Jim

Could trans. be stuck in between 2 gear and jam the engine? I got the shifter working by lifting the rubber shift cover and spraying around the shift ball that had a little bit of grease on it. But when it did give it up, it first popped in neutral and I could move shifter from side to side. then first to reverse and the other gears came easy. I can still feel each detent when it shifts now but from going to stuck to being able to shift with 1 finger makes me wander. But like I said from the beginning, when I went to the tractor to check it to see if it was stuck, I pushed down on fan belt and turned fan blade and watch crank turn enough for me to say it ain't stuck. When I hooked 12v to starter it cranked engine and rotated at least a half or whole revolution sounding normal but then slowed down and stopped Then I got the bright ideal to try to pull the tractor to see if that would make it turn. Nope... and now it's like I have wedged the engine tight. And there's nowhere to grab the crank or flywheel to give engine some help. Took starter off but the flywheel teeth are too far up in there and there's not much room. Does the crank rotate clock wise or counter clock wise when running?
Thank you

If I take that square plate off the bottom side of tractor would that allow access maybe to flywheel or a gear to get a pry bar to help get a wedge point to rotate engine?

Standing at the front of the Tractor, and imagine you are going to crank the engine with a factory crank. Any tractors I own,the rotation is Clock wise.
Your Tractor would not be the first Tractor to have stuck /bent valves in the HEAD. Your Tractor would not be the first Tcator to have governor components jammed in the front gear Train.

Your Tractor, your $$$$'s...... A comprehensive inspection is do. As in remove rocker cover and verify if there is anything amiss with the Valve Train?
Keep pulling this Tractor and you shall be spending unnecessary $$$$$'s.

The engine has been sitting up a long time. I tried turning it with a battery and it turned about a have turn and stopped. I was trying to back the engine up and work it back and fourth with oil in spark plug holes to loosen it up. Thats why I need to rotate engine by hand back and fourth.
Jack 1 rear wheel off ground. Put tractor in high gear and start rocking lifted wheel gently. Broke one of my tractors loose doing this. Pull plugs and squirt tranny fluid in each cylinder before turning lifted wheel.
