For all of you folks that shut off the fuel and run it til it dies....

It's a sintered brass insert which will allow excess gas to leak out. What I don't remember is where exactly the gas it will let drain out comes from.
Primarily it lets gas, pulled from the carburetor, that condenses/drops out of the air being taken up into the engine intake manifold drain out. If the needle doesn't seal it can let gas that gets into the carb throat leak out.
 
I must have gotten a defective fuel shutoff valve. I'll try another new one once the tank is empty.

Why not do a simple test. Shut the gas off let the engine die and then wait say 15 minutes and pull the carb drain plug. If you get a lot of gas then yes the valve maybe bad if you just get a small amount it is likely to be good and you may have the carb set a bit on the lean side so it takes longer for the engine to die when shut off
 
I shut my fuel off on my 8N and by the time I walk to the house it dies! Don't worry about the switch, I have magneto for ignition.
