Ford 1100 Starter solenoid

Hi, my little 1100 diesel on starts by doing this. I turn on the switch to start and then keep pushing the clutch pedal in and out, I will hear a click each time I do it and then eventually the starter spins up and the tractor starts and runs just fine. I decided that the solenoid was dying and ordered one. Something I should have studied more is do I have to remove the starter to replace the solenoid or can I just do it on the tractor?. The picture I saw of the breakdown of parts made me think I could do it on the tractor but not totally sure. Any help or advice appreciated. Thanks

I'm doubting the starter solenoid is the problem. The neutral safety switch is activated by the clutch pedal and that is where i would be looking. It may just need adjusting or have a dirty electrical connection. Look at the arm connected to the shaft into the tranny on the left side. Should a bracket bolted to the side with the switch mounted on it. It is activated when you push the pedal.

Hmmm, I have checked the clutch safety switch and it works every time I push in the pedal. I hooked a 12 volt light tester to it and it lit up every time. The clicking sound is coming from the starter area. I had a younger friend with ears better than mine stand next to the starter area and she said it came from the starter. I can check it all again in the morning. Thanks

That is good that you have already checked the neutral switch. It is working as it should then. You must be right about the solenoid. It will be easier to go ahead and remove the starter to replace the solenoid. Before you go too far however, check all wire and cable connections all the way back to the battery. A dirty cable can cause problems.
