Ford 1920 with bush hog loader 2400qt major fluid restriction?

Hi Folks,
I just picked up a Ford 1920 with loader and trying to figure out the loader problem. The 1920 has a strange set up with a diverter valve under the tractor that sends fluid to a loader or what ever and turned the other way it supplies the three point hitch. When I turn the valve toward the loader side it slows the engine down and you can really feel restriction is the screw that you turn. Strange way that they have the hoses also, they have the power beyond on the valve spool body plumbed back to the diverter. The return hose off the block is really small in my opinion and may be the reason for the extra return.
I really am poor on hydraulic knowledge and wonder if it's the return or body valve bypass (wherever that is). I tried to number the hoses at both ends to let you see what I have. Any help would be great, I think it's heating up the system the way it is.

You do not need to turn the valve in the diverter block for the three point hitch if everything is working properly. There are 3 ports on the diverter block. 1 feeds the loader, 1 receives oil from the power beyond on the valve to feed the 3 point hitch and one is a return to sump. The first thing to check is if there are quick disconnects in the system. quite often they will go bad so one side stays closed and blocks the oil flow. Sometimes they will come disconnected as well.

Thanks! Yes there are quick connects on the hoses, never thought of one going bad! I will pull the quick connects and check them first.

If you check to see which hose stiffens when it is running in bypass that will help determine which disconnect is the problem. It most likely is the power beyond hose.

I really appreciate your time, I've always messed with the old ford n's and such so things are different on these. I'll let you know how I make out.

I'm back! I can see the power beyond hose get rigid when I try to turn the screw/valve but seem to have flow through both parts of the quick connect. I pulled the pressure relief out of the bottom and it is free and clear.

When you turn the screw the other way does the 3 point hitch work as it should? What method did you use to test the quick connects?
In the clockwise position the three point works fine, as I rotate ccw the engine slows and the power beyond hose tenses. I just unhooked the coupler and pushed in each of the center pins, fluid shot out of the block side and I pushed in the valve spool side hit the key and fluid came out.

You need to test them when they are connected together. If one side can push in to far it doesn't open the other side.

I'll pull it from the diverter tomorrow and fire the tractor to see what I get. I really can't believe how small the opening in that line is, like 3/16".

What doesn't make sense is that the power beyond line supplies fluid to that side of the block right? If so why is the bogging only when the block is turned?

When you turn the valve oil goes through the block to the 3 point hitch. No oil is going to the loader valve therefor no oil is being supplied to the power beyond. If you didn't have a loader those ports would all be plugged.

I must be looking at something backward. I thought that fluid left the diverter thru the outlet port and went to the loader handles, then returned to the diverter inlet port. Then the power beyond port of the loader block supplied fluid back to the third port return.

When you turn the diverter valve to where the 3 point hitch works the oil goes through the block the same as it would if you didn't have a loader and those ports were plugged. When the loader was installed those plugs were removed to add the hoses and the diverter valve is turned so the oil from the pump is diverted to the loader valve to the power beyond which feeds the 3 point hitch. The third hose going to the diverter is a return to sump and return oil goes through that when the loader valve is activated.

Mark has explained the circuit.

To test the PB quicj coupler put the selector in the loader position and disconnect the power beyond hose couplers. Remove the coupler half from the PB hose and stick the open end of the hose in the hydraulic filler. Start the tractor and see if that fixes the problem. If it does the coupler is defective.

Also note your three point wont work with that hose disconnected and rerouted.

I don't know how to thank you enough. I went out this morning and took the quick coupler completely out and the system works flawlessly.
I'm 70 and farm raised but sometimes your mind gets set in one direction and gets welded there. I might go ahead and put new fluid in just to be safe, I think he was running it with the valve messed up for a long time.
Once again thanks and I hope that you stay safe and healthy --- I may need you again! lol
