Ford 800 running very rich

First off I want to let everyone know I’m new on here so if I post things in the wrong spots let me know and I’ll fix it. I have been watching these forums for a couple of years and the knowledge on the site helped me get through my Farmall H restoration, especially being only 20 years old I needed a lot of help at the beginning of my tractor journeys. Anyway I’m working on a family friends ford 800. Originally it would run and randomly die and I chased the issue around for weeks and finally found a broke distributor shaft where the advance weights are supposed to mount. I fixed that issue and it fired right up but then the next day went to fire it up and it started running real rough and coughing black smoke out the exhaust pipe. I had rebuilt the carb thinking that was my original issue so I tried tuning the carb again and found that no matter what I did with the high speed screw it did not change how it ran. I was just wondering if anyone on here had any ideas before I tried to find a new carb for it
Thanks in advance

Black smoke indicates too much fuel. Float level may be set too high, float might be dragging on the float bowl, needle not seating properly, due to debris, misalignment, etc..

Or the float is sinking from a leak of fuel into it, or from being collapsed. A particle of dirt can be stuck under the needle/ Shutting off the fuel and running it out of fuel in the carb might dislodge the dirt when the fuel is turned be=ack on. Jim

As the other 2 have said plus if the air cleaner is clogged up it can cause it to run rich.

I have an Amazon aftermarket carb on my Farmall C. It was under $40
Amazon shows

EAE9510C Carburetor Replacement For Ford Jubilee NAA NAB 600 620 630 650 660 700 740 800 850 Tractor, B2NN9510A Carb Replacement For Marvel Schebler TSX42

$27.99
The best part, Amazon has yet to give a hassle if I have to return anything, free return shipping. So what do you have to lose?
Remember the small screw is the idle screw and the big screw is the main jet.
On both my Farmall and Jubilee, the idle screw is opposite from what you think.
If you turn the idle screw in, you make the fuel mix rich. Try backing the small screw out to lean it down.

Yup, at idle rpm the fuel supply is set, the screw/needle adjusts air flow.

First step is to disconnect the tube between the air filter and the carburetor to ensure there isn't a blockage in the air filter. I've found a mouse nest in mine.

I work on a lot of small engines. And i always always put a Q-tip in a drill and with carb cleaner i clean the seat where the needle rests. It removes any micron size particle that prevents the needle from doing its job. It has solved a lot of issues whether it is a new needle or used.

Did you replace the condenser in the distributor when you worked on it. Those will go bad right out of the box. That will act like a fuel issue when it's electrical.

This tractor has a pertronix electronic ignition in it I forgot to mention that. Thank you for the thought though I’ll definitely remember that for future problems I have
