Fordson diesel engine ID?

Hi all, I've just bought an old Moore wheel loader and it is powered by a Fordson Diesel engine, can anyone give me some info about it, HP, model, etc? The serial number is on the right front corner just below the cyl head. It is - S299/57. It has a Simms pneumatic gov injector pump. It looks a lot like the engine that was in the Power Major I had some years back. Thanks!

Everything will be the same, it is just the industrial version of the Power/Super Major/Fordson Major Diesel engine that ran from 1951 to 1964

Thanks for that, any idea which end of the time bracket will it be? Does the 57 in the serial number indicate 1957? Thanks

Those engines are a bit difficult as, unlike the Agri. Versions, the Serial numbers were not recorded. 57 could be right but not certain.
See if you can find the date code on the block it should be above the dynamo under the manifold. You also might find one by looking straight down between the valve cover and the inlet manifold. It will look something like A24A, the first letter is the month, the number is the date and the final letter is the year. These numbers are cast in not stamped. A is the 1957 number.

Hi all ! I'm glad I found this website. I have a Fordson 5000 major. I'm trying to find out the year it was manufactured. I have been able to get parts for restoring my tractor. However , still would like know if someone can help me determine the year it was built. I see it engraved in the head of the engine C945488 (Can't make any sense out of that) On the Engine Block " EIDDN-6050-J3167

Thanks and best regards

Looks like your tractor is a 1963 February serial number, built just before the New Performance tractors came out in July. The engine number/serial number has been stamped by Ford at the factory, they used that shape of script, but they have left off the "08" prefix. it should read "08C". If you find some of the casting codes from all the cast parts on the tractor they should start "3" and read something like "3B20" which would be "1963, February 20th". The easiest one to find is on the side of the gearbox where the clutch pedal pivots. Cast numbers like the E1DDN one you quote are moulding numbers and will be the same on every tractor with that block which could date back to 1952.

That is still a mould number and of no use when dating the tractor. This is what you need, this one is the earlier format but should give you an idea of where to find it, yours should stat with a 3 as my previous post.

Codes like this are on all cast parts and will indicate if the tractor is original if they all appear around a month apart.

OK Thanx Majorman , will spot it when I get to it.

New member and this is my first post so thanks for letting me join.

I have spent months on and off getting a super major in useable condition. You would think this would be enough to put anyone off but I have just bought a rough NP major to eventually restore.
This thread interests me as I have been trying to identify both tractors and have come to the conclusion that this website https://www.selen.nu/cgi-bin/trsnr.pl?lang=en may possibly be wrong? I ask because other websites show 08D as 1964 (my engine is 08D) and the serial numbers like this:
Fordson Super Major
1960 1578886 – 1583907
1961 1583907 (Old numbering system ended in October 1961)
1961 08A300001 (New numbering system commenced November 1961)
1962 08B741001
1963 08C945000
1964 08D940000
(Last Super Major was number 08D976148 July 1964

If I try the last super major number shown above in the search box of the first website this returns this result:

08D-976148: October 1963
New Performance Super Major
Wrong year code (D). It should be C according to the serial number.
You did not type a mont code. It should be L according to the serial number.

The same website gives casting codes which do seem to make sense, this new tractor comes up as Feb 1964 on the back end.

O8D is certainly a 1964 but I believe the designation of October may be wrong. I was working at a Ford dealer in 1964 and the supply of tractors dried up in August when the Dagenham factory stopped tractor production and production was moved to the new factory at Basildon. No Super Majors or Dextas were built at Basildon although it is possible that a few might have been assembled from parts by Ford or by South Essex Motors. We had a yard full of tractors of all types as Ford cleared their stocks before the factory shut down and those stocks had to last us through to 1965 when a few new '000 Series arrived.

All the tooling was cleared from the factory in the summer of 1964 and car tooling was moved into its place.
