Gehl 1870 baler any good? Parts available?

as a small time hobby farmer, I’m looking to upgrade my equipment without breaking the bank. For the last little while, I’ve been looking for a good newer baler to replace my ancient Vermeer 605C I currently have.

On Facebook, I came across a Gehl 1870 for $1000. It’s apparently in working condition, and comes with the baler controller and a spare parts baler that looks like it’s been picked through pretty good.

Are these good balers? Do they make a good grass/alfalfa hay bale reliably? Do they have any common issues? If it does break, are parts still available for them? What do they usually sell for?

Ya, they're a decent enough baler. I don't think that one has a computer does it? I believe the ones that were computerized started with the 75 series. Bearings, chains and belting are common parts, available wherever such things are sold. Pickup tines are available through Shoup. For that price, I wouldn't be afraid of it. I bought my first Gehl baler in 79. I've bought three new ones and one used. I'm still using the last one I bought and I roll a lot of hay every year.

The pictures show a box for the auto-twine system. Good to hear. Maybe I’ll make an offer.
