Looking at tractors and looking to cut across Canada to save time. going from NY to MI cuts 3-4 hours off.
If i buy in MI and haul back to NY what paperwork will i need at the boarder? seeing most tractors dont have titles or any real paperwork.

A good cleaning so no noxious weeds or other debris from what I under stand. I would just go around. Depending on where you need to pick it up at. Then you have to have all the pass port or one of those new fancy licenses to get across the border also. IT has been 20 plus years since I have been across the border with even a car. I used to cross at Port Huron/Sarnia and then out at Fort Erie /Buffalo. Then reverse to come back home. So a lot has changed since then. Just had to pay the bridge tool then.

The time you save could be spent at customs. When empty go across Canada when loaded it will all depend on the mood of the agent. The Canada customs is not hard it’s getting back on the us side. Bill of sale and the persons contact info. Needs to be under 2500 per unit (tractor) and you (new owner) need to be in the transport vehicle. If over 2500 has to go thru a broker or if u haul for someone else it has to go thru a broker.

My last few times have been on snowmobile. We were invited inside, telling us that if we went through the process there at that time, that coming back it would be just seconds. We showed our passports, answered a few questions and they entered our info. coming back through a few days later it was just seconds. Another time coming back with sleds on the trailer they wanted me to show them the new clutch that I had to put in it while in Quebec, but when I explained that it was now part of the sled she changed her mind. I know that cleanliness is extremely important.

Been a couple years since I have done it but… crossing empty is no problem so long as you have a passport and no history that will keep you out of Canada. Returning with a tractor, it is best to have a picture of the tractor and serial number plate printed on a sheet of paper. Stop at US Customs and ask for a personal goods registration card. Post card sized form tat you fill out with your information, customs will then staple it to the picture, and date stamp it. You can then proceed to Canada and you will present that card to both Canadian customs and US Customs when you come back. Biggest problem with this is it is near impossible to get to US Customs at the Michigan ports. Also, use the car lanes not the truck lane. Truck lane is only for those with commercial papers.

I recently went from NY to MI with a camper I bought. I didn’t do the registration card as I had a temp tag in my name, bill of sale, title etc. The only issue I had was Canadian customs decided they needed to trash the inside of my truck while I stood in the cold for 45 minutes with no jacket. Only got routine questions when I came back to the states.

Reading the CDL thread here got me to thinking. Ontario considers any vehicle over 4500 KG to be commercial. Take that into consideration when planning this trip. There are several MTO scales along that route and likely at least one will be open and they will expect to visit with you.

..So if I remember correctly....About 2001 and When the Swine Flu..or Pig Flu hit England and Europe ..They wanted all farm equipment power washed and inspected at their facility for about $2,000 dollars.. ..as they were afraid with a tractor just off a farm it could have manure ect and dirt ect... that could be carrying diseases... from and flu from a pig farm.......So my point is ...just like trees.......you just dont take things across a boarder.....its not that easy...and with the bird flu we are having here ..it might be a big issue...also...with the tensions were going thru with trade and Canada.........they might hit you with a Tariff or Charge for it.....So Im just saying you need to do your DD before trying that... and save yourself alot of money and trouble.....and just drive the extra 3 or 4 hours and stay here in the States....this is just opinion.......it been along time but boardr crossing s now I think are alot more stirck...?

Gave up and bought something in the states. Someone else can deal the the Tim Hortons people at the boarder lol
