How much does a 9 ton Eager Beaver tri-axle trailer tare?

Notice that I did not ask "How much does a 9 ton Eager Beaver trailer WEIGH?" because I know someone would say "9 TONS! HAW HAW HAW!" :)

Okay, so what's the tare weight on a 9 ton Eager Beaver trailer? It's a tri-axle bumper pull.

I want to pull it with a 3/4 ton pickup truck, loaded with a Farmall H and a 2-bottom plow. Yes, it's a little overkill but the price is right.

The problem is, I don't want to end up with a trailer that's so HEAVY on its own that it takes up all my truck's tow capacity.

If I were to pull an axle to lighten it up and make it easier to tow, the front axle would probably be best, right?

I towed one that I think weighed 5000#, I had a trail king 9 ton dual tandem and it weighed 5600#. 5000-5500 sounds good. Does it have the good axles with budd wheels or are the old mobile home style axles? What are they asking for it?

They're asking $2000. It's got the mobile-home style axles unfortunately. That's a big turn-off...

I figured if it didn't weigh 3-4 tons on its own, I could live with the spoke wheels.

Mine weighs 4470 with chains & binders in the tool box. I pull it with a 3/4 ton diesel pickup, no problem. Tows like a dream.

The spoke wheels aren’t terrible, they are 14” wheels and do offer a lower deck height. You can get good tires to fit those wheels, just don’t run the cheap mobile home tires.

I frankly would run and not look back . I was pulling not mine but house trailer axle trailer and the wheel came over the lugs and passed me up hill on the interstate east of Billings one time. Vowed to never have those axles to pull again.

Must have been worn out or loose, I’ve seen the same thing happen with stud trailer wheels.
Also, there’s a difference in a homemade trailer using house trailer axles and a trailer that came from the factory with these style axles. Some Eager Beaver trailers used these axles from the factory, they are usually heavier and better made than house trailer axles.

What have you found for "good ones"? I put 8-14.5 Towmasters on my Fruehauf about 5 yrs ago, still have plenty of tread but getting old. I have only found one source for a 9-14.5, and it was maybe Hercules IIRC. I would much rather run 8-lugs with heavy LT tires

I think Hercules are a decent tire. Get the 14 ply ones and they are good for 3,638 lbs each, which be more than a 7k axle is rated for.

Regular 8 lug 16" tires are good too, but stay away from the LT tires. LT is for "light truck", you need a heavy duty trailer tire.

My actual experience has been just the opposite, considering the quality of many of the offshore "trailer" tires- I have much better luck with a HD good brand LT tire

On wagons trailer and all I use what I have as long as it is an E rating or higher on it. Lighter ones will get tractor steer tire duty. With tires as expensive as they are I use whatever fits and has enough rating for the job. Standard load tires are just 4 ply rated car or go buggy tires and used as such.
