How to clean JD H air filter

Is there a way to clean a JD H air filter element? I know how to change the oil in the oil bath. I'm talking about up in the air filter element above this. Reason I'm asking, I have some oil being drawn up through the emulsion tube and I'm thinking this is because not enough air is being drawn in through the air filter so it's drawing it in from the crankcase. Thanks for the help. If there is a recommended youtube video, thanks for any links.

Soak it a few days in a good degreaser and let it drip dry. May take a couple of washings to get it clean

Can the wire element be removed without removing the entire casing?

I've cleaned a couple by plugging the inlet and outlets with rubber stoppers. Turn it upside down and fill it up with purple power. Let it soak overnight and flush it out with hot water. Set it in a bucket in case the stoppers leak.
