Hy-Tran...I give up

Just for info this post is from March of 2023 so the prices in the opening post were from that timeframe. I agree with dhermesc if I had a $100 - 200k plus tractor with a Powershift or CVT transmission that I needed to rely on ever season I would probably buy the CNHI oil.
BTW farmall pete is a YouTuber on his channel Just a Few Acres Farms a couple years back he did a video series on an extensive restoration of a Farmall MD, he is currently doing an 856 which maybe he finished.(Edit: I checked he is still working on the 856) He also recently did an engine redo and maybe more on a 40s IH ton and a half truck, not 100 percent sure on the truck info.

I was wondering if that was him, he has a great channel I watch him all of the time. using his work on the 856 to teach myself on my 806.

oh that's cool. we have no Case dealer around here in CA, just Kubota, Holland and a Kiota I think (never been there). the Kubota dealer ( I have 2 Kubota's a L3901 and an excavator) and they do basically the same thing they want you to use an UDT2 trans fluid that is over 200 per 5 gallon, and I have been using the Tractor supply premium tran/Hydraulic fluid and it has worked just fine, it is still 65.99 per so its still not cheap but way better that over 200.
 
Fleet Farm here in Wisconsin carries a Hy-Tran knock off that I use and haven't noticed any problems. About $65 a bucket which isn't a bad price when I had to buy 5 buckets recently. I noticed Fleet Farm also has a John Deere blend and the buckets look the same exept for the small writing on it. So what ever the mystery blend is it seems to be a big deal and specifically for CASE/IH.

Honestly, you won't notice any problems, until you do. There's no guarantee that you WILL have problems. There is no guarantee you WON'T. That is with ANY lubricant. You pays your money and you takes your chances.

If you do have problems it will be a LONG LONG time before they happen. Maybe never. Why people insist that there are instant consequences akin to getting hit in the shin with a sledgehammer, I will never understand.

Well we have been using the aftermarket oil for 30 years or more. I would think if I was going to have problems show they would have by now. We use it in all the older IH tractors and the Stiegers for hydraulic oil on them. The one with the Power shift in is the 7140 and I don't know about that one since my brother usually handles the oil in it. It does get cross oiled by hooking to some of the implements using them so I can't say on that yet since it has only been about 5or 6 years here. Those old IH tractors are simple and the only real issue would be the TA clutches . Which again we don't have any with a TA in them so just a hydraulic system with transmission lubrication. Much the same on the Stiegers since they are all just 10 speed trans with a 2 spd drop box on one tractor. If we had several Power shift or other sophisticated transmissions in tractors I would probably use the Hytran or Hyguard depending on the tractor since the cost of going through one would buy a lot of oil.

I've said it before, any reputable brand of hydraulic/transmission fluid should serve well.
Just don't use a hydraulic fluid (like 303) where a hydraulic/transmission fluid is called for.

303 is such a sorry oil that the NC Department of Agriculture banned the sale of it in N.C. because of it's poor lubricating properties.
 
From Missouri Dept of Ag,
Missouri retailers of tractor hydraulic fluid (303) have been notified by the Department that these products are misbranded because they fail to meet any current tractor manufacturer’s specifications. The John Deere (JD) 303 designation is 57 years old and has been obsolete for 43 years. In addition, there are no specifications available for 303 Tractor Hydraulic Fluids and, as such, products making only “303” claims cannot be tested to assure compliance with any known specifications. This action is being taken to protect tractor owners from equipment damage.


Over the summer the Department sampled 14 different 303 fluids, many claiming to work in almost every tractor. All 14 of these 303 fluids failed to meet current specifications and were found to be underperforming to the point that damage was likely to result from use.
 
John Deere 303 Special Purpose Oil was a formula, not a spec like the current JDM J20C is. Sperm whale oil was a key ingredient in JD 303, with the Endangered Species Act in 1974 the Sperm whale oil became unavailable and 303 was replaced by J14 series in 1974, which has been upgraded several times over the years.

Bottom line is the JD303 oil can't be made to the original John Deere formula and anything claiming to be 303 is false advertising (and likely junk oil).
