IH 1468: what are the gear shift controls?

I'm working on a friend's 1468 that hasn't run in five years. Got it running this morning. But the gear shifters don't seem to work right, and there are no labels so I'm not even sure what they're supposed to do.

This is my understanding so far (correct me if I'm wrong):
The left lever does forward-neutral-reverse, and the right lever does gears 1 through 4 (all the way forward being 1st gear).

The left lever will also move to the right and go back and forth (as in the second picture); what does that do? And what's the lever in the third picture, where my hand is?

I believe that those linkages were known for wearing and getting hard to shift. Most likely someone removed the cover because they were trying to get at a shifting problem.

More than likely the linkage or levers are worn and they got it stuck in 2 gears. To fix that situation you should be able to slowly let the clutch up at idle till the engine starts to work slightly with tractor not moving it is proven to be stuck in 2 gears usually reverse and low. So now look at the linkage going back towards the rear of the tractor under the platform with a screw driver or other small pry bare wiggle the linkage till it lets the slot for the park brake and park brake knife looking arm slip up through that slot in the linkage once that happens you will then be able to shift it though be careful of the lever going from high back to get into reverse or from low into reverse since those are the most problematic positions. Also look to see if the slot where the left lever at the top will move freely from left to right that is the movement to get from N to R by moving the lever to the right for R and left for High and low. By playing with it a bit you will see what I mean . There are detents on ech link to hold the forks in gear once shifted so they can be a bit stiff to work sometimes. My 856 sombody cut the front of the platform out so they could get to the linkage better from this happening I would guess since it will scramble like that if not careful. They then welded tabs on the side cut so it will set in there on the cast nubs in front and still set in place like before it was cut out. I actually like it that way, easier to get to the dip stick for the tranmission since the bail to the stick is missing.

Yeah, I think that's what's going on. I got it to shift through all the gears and drive around a bit, but it often gets stuck in a gear, or occasionally in 2 gears like caterpillar guy said, and it's very hard to get it back into neutral. This tractor has lots of different things wrong with it...

They are popular as collector items now but when they were new no one wanted them - burned a lot of fuel and not much more power (according to tractordata NO more HP) than the 436 I6 engine. And the 436 was much easier to turnup the power.
