IH 2656 injection pump not pushing to injectors

Howdy. Working on an industrial 656, 2656. Just picked it up have not had it running yet working on getting the fuel system primed. I’ve primed it to the book and got fuel through the pump and out the return line to the tank as per the IT shop manual lays out. It drips some at the connection. I’ll fix that later but I don’t think it’s part of the issue. I’ve blown back through to make sure the line back to the tank is clear. Can not get fuel to the injectors except for cylinder 5,6 cracked the line for the outer facing line on the pump which is for cylinder 3 or 4 and have fuel at the pump there but not super strong. Any ideas or am I looking at a pump rebuild?

if you are not getting fuel out of the injector lines when loose or disconnected , you have an internal pump problem as gummed up . with lines off it should be shooting out 3 ft." diesel tech" is the pump guy here. have you checked or changed the fuel filters. i have also added fuel treatment right in the filter canisters to get rid of gum.

Yeah I’ve got great flow through the filters to the pump and I added some treatment since it’s been a while since it’s been run. The line I had off at the pump shot fuel like 6-8”. Thanks for the reply.

Did you hit the line at the injectors AFTERA the line nut was loose? That engine has Ermeto line sleeves that fit TIGHT and won't always come loose with the nuts loose. When did engine last run? If it's been awhile there's a good chance the rotor plungers are stuck inside. On any glow plug engine I like to bleed them with ALL the glow plugs removed so engine cranks faster, then once you see fuel at ALL injectors inlets, tighten the nuts then crank until you see air/fuel mist blow out the glow plug holes. Now you KNOW fuel is getting into the pre chamber cups, install the plugs, heat them and start engine.

The guy I got it from said it ran last summer. I have not done that. First IH I’ve had that has glow plugs. I’ll try that tomorrow and let you know what happens. Thanks again for the replies I really appreciate it!

If that doesn’t work you might try towing it around a bit in 4th gear. Check the glow plugs for continuity. A test light with its lead powered on the battery cable at the starter touching it to each glow plug spade when they are unplugged should light.

Ended up doing the 7.3 glow plug upgrade and got the fuel system primed and she fired up. Thanks again for the help!

so basically you did not have it bled properly. if it was bleed you would have saw white smoke out the exhaust. good to hear the outcome.
