IH # 32 Sickle Bar Mower **** PROGRESS *****

Hello everyone,

I am happy to announce that I am have a lot of positive progress on the FREE IH # 32 Sickle Bar Mower.

The Pitman Arm should be here today.

What I can use your help with is the bolts for the arm. I need some new ones but I have no idea what they are called or where to get them.

They sort of look like Carriage bolts, but the differ from Carriage bolts because the head is completely flat to sit smooth/even with the cutter told down things (again no idea the proper name)

So two questions
1) Do I need to use that exact style of bolt? If not, will the standard Carriage head bolt work?
2) If I do need that style of bolt what are they called and where can I find them.

Here are some pictures that I hope will help identify them.

Thanks in advance for your help. YT has never let me down

I think the original pitman arms were riveted to the metal end pieces. I've used 1/4 in hex head bolts on mine but you have to make sure they are not too long. I've put carriage bolts in the knife guards you are showing but I think you can buy the flat heat bolts at Tractor Supply and is probably the better way to go as it won't wear off the heads with time. Bolt depo or Master Carr might be a place to find them on line.

Those are GR-5 counter sunk head plow bolts. At least that what CaseIH hands out these days. Don't recall the dimensions.

Is that a 484000R1 guard? I like them, they are malleable & you can change out the ledger plates. Not a fan of the forged MD & MC guards. Especially on an old, warped slab.

Mike,

First, THANKS FOR THE HELP!!!!

I have no idea what it is. Look at me in this light...... "Sickle Bar Mowers for Children K - 5th grade"

I know NOTHING about these things. But I will try to find out and get back to you.

Charlie,

Thanks I will see what those two (2) places offer.

I am finding these bolts under the name "Plow Bolts"
Fastenal seems to carry them.
BUT MAN-OH-MAN are they proud of them.
Almost $1.00 each.
They are 1/2" by 1-1/2" long

Oh well, at least I have found them!!! Thanks all of you for your help

No prob!

Fastenal seems to be the cheapest so far. CaseIH wants $3.68 for 1!

The part number should be on the tab of the guard that goes over the knife itself. If you ever have to change out one of the modified end guards, buy a plain one & grind it down yourself. CaseIH wants 3x the amount of the regular guards.

Compare the modded one below to yours.

The Part number on the Rock Guard is MB2041 as near as I can tell, it is pretty rusty

I believe the pitman bolts are 5/16 hex head bolts. Length is different from one end to the other, like 2" vs. 1-5/8".

The guard bolts should be 7/16 diameter, #3 plow bolts. They are in 2 different lengths, depending on whether they go through a knife clip or not (1-3/16 vs. 1-9/16). Of course, you won't have much luck finding the odd fractional lengths.

Thanks for the correction. They are 7/16". Thought something didn't sound right.

Rowse should have the ones with the right length. The ones on my mower don't show signs of being cut off. Not sure of price, but should be cheaper than CaseIH.

You might try Webb Cutting Components in Grand Island, NE. That's where I have bought a lot of my mower parts along with Rouse Rakes.
