IH 484 electrical issues

I have a 484 and can't figure out the temp and fuel gauges. They kinda work the temp gauge quickly rises and the fuel tank shows full or 3/4 full depending on the amount of fuel in the tank low fuel is 3/4 full tank and gauge is slammed to extreme full. I used a laser thermometer on the block and its not over heating. I replaced the temp sensor. I feel it's a ground issue but not sure.

I seen older posts that had a link for wiring diagram but the link isn't good anymore. Can anyone provide a screen shot or scan the wiring diagram for me.

Is this a common issue with this tractor. Head lights turn signals all work as they should

Welcome to the forums.

You say you replaced the temp gauge sender. Did you identify the gauge and purchase the sender it calls for or a generic sender? The 484 parts book shows two different temp gauges and specifies the sender to use with each one. Gauges and senders must match ohm ranges, they are not all the same.

Same for the fuel gauge and sender.

Temp gauge sender came from my local case ih dealer. I thought my sender was the issue and was the reason for the replacement. Could they have given me the wrong one, absolutely possible. Have not replaced fuel sender.

31 is fuel and 33 is temp what is the B and T mean on the gauges. 32 is fuel sender and it's grounded to the tank?

One of the problems with the Europe and Canadian models is a molex electric plug at the rear of the seat that the pins become corroded and there is one ground wire that connects to a bolt on the deck plate behind the seat as well. This ground wire supplies the ground for everything on the rear of the tractor, fuel tank, rear lights.
Re Louisville, KY, USA assembled tractors, I believe there is slightly different wiring as the tractor was assembled with Delco electrical system like the IH 404 and 504 models built in the USA.
Re fuel gauge, my brother has five of these IH Doncaster, UK built tractors and after so many years the fuel gauge all start acting like your 484, he just looks in the tank or has a yard stick to measure the fuel level.

As another poster mentioned that the sender unit has to match the gauge for correct measurements.

Just move the sender arm with it hooked up out of the tank.See if it is changing when moved. As for the matching deal. I can't say for sure. I do know I replaced one in an 806 with a generic sender. It would read off just a bit.either would show full when not qiute or then not show empty . The tank has a baffle in it so had to fit it in around that. Dad said do you want it to show full. I said it needs to read accurate at the empty side. Full will not have you walking even if it only shows about 3/4-7/8 full when full. Off at the bottom will leave you walking. So if it does not lay on the bottom but will read at the correct level for you the top side doesn't matter if it only shows less than full when full. Just measure the depth of the tank and the movement travel of the sender arm and adjust so it reads the bottom right the rest is not a problem. If the sender changes with an OHM meter on it when unhooked from power and the gauge does read it is a connection problem . If the gauge doesn't read with power on it it is probably the gauge bad. It will normally got from empty to full or vise versa with power to it. IF it doesn't move gauge is problem. Needle should move on an OHM meter with the movement of the arm if the sender is good. Watching the needle when moving from epmty to full or vise versa will tell you if you have enough travel for the tank and gauge.

That sounds really annoying! I had a similar issue with my old tractor, and it turned out to be a grounding problem too. I went through all the connections, especially near the dashboard, and found a loose ground wire that fixed the gauges.
For the wiring diagram, I found a lot of useful info in Facebook groups dedicated to my model, so it might be worth checking those out.

Be careful grounding the wires on the sender on top of the tank.
I will try to find the test procedure in my IH service manual as I remember a warning about grounding the terminals.

Hello Jd, welcome to YT! Here is a link to the wiring diagram. Wiring diagram IH 484 & others
We have a 484 in Canada and this electrical diagram looks much more like our tractor than the diagram in the owners manual. The one in the manual is very generic and has many circuits not present in our tractor. Also, more than one person has done wiring adjustments on our tractor, so even the diagram is a very-helpful guide, not a precise description. We have a Simms cab with its own wiring added too, so that adds complexity.
