IH 504 Carb

Still on the 504 with another issue. I am calling it a carb issue but not sure. I have ultrasonic cleaned the carb twice, sprayed passages, blew them out, bought a minimal rebuild kit and I still have to use 1/2 to 3/4 choke above idle. Adjusted the governor linkage to what I think is correct per the manual. Choke plate and throttle plates seem to be opening and closing correctly without play. Plenty of fuel getting there, blew out the air cleaner a bit and it seems fine. Are there any non carb issues I should be looking at?

My guess is you installed the venturi backwards. Some people will say it can't be done but it can.

Also I would use brake cleaner to check the manifold gasket. It's no where near as volatile as carburetor cleaner. It didn't take but one fire to stop me from using carburetor cleaner decades ago.

Sounds like you've cleaned it well. I always pull the main fuel nozzle and rod every small hole in it with wire from from a wire brush anyway. They can clog up and be very hard to clean any other way. I also pull the float out and boil the rest of the carb in vinegar for 30 minutes.

If there is a wear dent in the tab pushing up the needle, the new needle/s can be crooked in there causing sticking as well. Jim

Update....I sent the carb out to where I send them and got it back and installed. Problem solved...works great. M-Man was close about the venturi...he said it had a #25 in it vs the #21 to match the main vent I have. Throw in that how he cooks them may have cleaned up everything better than my ultrasonic. Now I can work on putting the 2000 loader back on which isn't easy because of the pedals and floor pans.
